UFC 127: BJ Penn Prepares For Jon Fitch with Boxing Trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr.
    Posted by JT King

BJ Penn will look to earn his second victory in a row when he faces top welterweight contender Jon Fitch at UFC 127 in Sydney, Australia on Feb. 26.

In preparing for the contest, the former lightweight and welterweight champion has enlisted the help of infamous boxing trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr.

Mayweather Sr. recently told Fight Hype that in just the few days they have worked together, Penn has shown improvements in his striking game.

“In just the 3 days I’ve been working with him, he has improved man”, Mayweather Sr. stated. “In his words, man, he told me, ‘I ain’t never seen some of this stuff you’re showing me man’”.

Penn has previously been recognized for his crisp boxing in bouts against the likes of Sean Sherk and Diego Sanchez where he dominated his opponent in the striking department. Mayweather Sr. believes, however, that if Penn utilizes what he has been teaching him, he’ll improve even further.

He was only supposed to be down here for a week, but he said he’s learning so much that he’s gonna stay two. If they really want to win this thing and look good, I would like to have him for 3 to 4 weeks, but trust me…the stuff I’m showing him in these 2 weeks will work if he uses it; trust me.”

While working with a world-class boxing trainer may do wonders for Penn’s striking, Jon Fitch poses much more of a threat with his wrestling and ground game than anything else. Much like Georges St. Pierre, the weight and wrestling advantage likely lays in the corner of the former Purdue University wrestling standout.

But Mayweather Sr. has his own thoughts on Fitch. “Yeah, I heard he is about 6 foot tall and cuts a good bit of weight to make 170 pounds, but guess what? If BJ throws his shots the way I got him throwing his shots, he will win.”

Not a man to hold back his opinions, Mayweather Sr. also expressed his thoughts on the head trainer for current boxing great Manny Pacquiao, Freddie Roach, who Penn worked with previously. “I bet he ain’t going back to (Freddie Roach) either. He worked with Freddie “The Joke Coach” Roach and he telling me he has never seen the stuff I’m showing him, so what does that tell you? Man, the only thing Freddie Roach can do better than me is wash my car”.
