Comments Thread For: Hopkins-Pascal: Direct Rematches Part of The Problem

In one sense, I applaud Preisdent Don Jose Sulaiman of the World Boxing Council for mandating that light heavyweight champ Jean Pascal give 45-year-old Bernard Hopkins an immediate rematch.

    " but shouldn't the marketplace have a say ? "

Over and above a legally binding contract ?

Following standard business practice, there is absolutely nothing to discuss here..... there is a contract in place, end of story.

I would prefer an immediate Hopkins rematch, especially as Bernard is nearly 46 and it will be harder for him to stand to one side than it will be for Dawson..... but a contract is a contract.

I wonder how much pressure Shaw will exert?

Just enough for a good step-aside payday, or will be go for the fight?

aint nobody tryna see a pascal-dawson rematch..simple as that, Dawson should just shut up and fight Tavoris Cloud while Hopkins beats up Pascal

          rematch clauses are bull****

the only way i agree to one is if the rematch happens within 3 months of the

          first fight..

not holding the damn belt and fights hostage...

do the saints have a rematch clause from the loss from the seahawks on

          saturday??

just think if they did, then we wouldnt get to see the next enticing matchup

and continued playoffs or tournament to see the best fight or play the best.

Not like Pascal-Dawson ended in a satisfying way either. Rematch clauses are often there for a reason, and in this case I think it should be. Lots of fights have rematch clauses, but only the fights that should have a rematch tend to happen.

I agree, but I can see amay's point as well.

Before Haye beat Valuev for the WBA strap, the Klitschko's attempted to tie him into a 2-bro 3-fight rematch clause. If you beat me you fight my brother, and if you beat him then you fight me again.

Obviously that is not a standard rematch scenario, but it is annoying to see belt's tied up because of contractual issues.

In saying that, rematch clauses do have a place, they are a necessary evil in a lot of ways, but they can also offer redemption and help insure against unpopular upsets/robberies/lucky punches.

The best point you made is this.....

" Lots of fights have rematch clauses, but only the fights that should have a rematch tend to happen "

There is the odd exception, but by and large, that is correct.

Both Pascal/Dawson and Pascal/Hopkins qualify for a rematch, and both rematches could be entertaining. It's just the pecking order that is TBA

There is currently no clarity whatsoever at LHW, and Cloud is knocking on the door as well.

In this case..... I say fak the rematches, let's start over and have a 4-way tourney at 175?

How much **** will Shaw kick up about this ?

Just enough to pump the step-aside, or will he actually go for the fight ?

Hopkins Vs Pascal II is a better fight and Dawson is lazy as **** taking forever and if he was so damn determined he wouldnt even be in this position right now.
