According to Kenji Miyasaka, WBA "regular" bantamweight champion Koki Kameda issued a challenge to Nonito Donaire. Kameda won the vacant title on December 26 with a twelve round decision over Alexander Munoz at the Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. Donaire was sitting ringside to watch the fight, when Kameda threw a challenge in the Filipino fighter's direction.
