Williams Trainer: Sergio Martinez Closed His Eyes During KO of Paul Williams

Paul just got caught. One thing about boxing, there are some things that you can teach in the gym, and there are some things that you can't.

You can't teach defending a punch that you can't see coming. You can't teach against that. People might say, 'Well, you should have done this,' or, 'You should have done that.'

But that's because their understanding is limited. If you can't see something, how can you defend against it?

We knew that the only chance that Sergio Martinez had was to stop Paul. And, sure enough, in desperation, and with his eyes closed, just ducking his head and throwing a punch, he landed.

When Sergio Martinez landed that punch, he didn't even know that it had landed. Sergio Martinez was just as surprised as everybody else, that's the way that I saw him.

Martinez didn't want to see how Williams was going to fall that's why he had his eyes closed.

So what he is saying is that Williams lost to a guy fighting with his eyes closed. That to me says a lot more about Williams than it does Sergio, he was sloppy and dumb enough to get caught with a guy closing his eyes.

You can't defend a punch that you don't see coming? How about you teach your fighter to stop being so damn open and coming in so open when he's throwing a punch?
