As 2010 comes to a close, it really depends on who you ask as to whether the year was a prosperous one in the world of boxing. On the surface there were developments such as the Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather fallout and various fights being postponed or pushed back that seemed to hinder the sport but you can’t deny the compelling action that took place in the months of November and December and that seems to be what many are hanging on to.

The great recession? Vegas is dying because its lost its appeal. It still had the freshness about 20 years ago. People remembered it for the Elvis years and there was a real glamour to the occasion there. Thats why Vegas was a draw. In fact it WAS a draw to the extent that boxing came to it. Is there a band from Europe doing arena tours playing Vegas lately?

Nowadays its become this tired old man hanging around waiting to dip into your pockets. People want to see an event not a chance to be ripped off and screwed over by the house. I think boxing is heading back towards the core of the game and it needs to get on the road to draw the crowds. Bring the appeal back to the sport that was lost in the nineties when a lot of tragedies that highlighted the sport's brutality came together. McLellan, Tyson-Holyfield and others.

It wasn't just a serious ring injury but dirty things happening in the ring that turned a lot of heads away. Boxing needs to reclaim those heads and stewing in Vegas didn't help the sport. The current resurgence is due to big events in the pipeline and boxing going around the world and into arenas.

We need more Rumbles in the Jungle and Thrillers in Manila. Not sleepy fights in the casino.

I love this format for interviewing. BoxingScene has been doing it for a few months, and it's great.

Bert called Ricardo Mayorga "a great fighter". I think he said this but thought something else.

Tim Bradley/Devon Alexander = two guys with four first names. Classic.

Vegas has been holding boxing back for a long time now. Just look at how successful UFC has been by staging fights all over the country. Arum's made a slight move in the right direction with Dallas, but after Pac/Margs lackluster attendance who knows if that'll happen again.

No one cares what a bunch of grey-hairs in tuxedos are interested in. The common fans in America need to take boxing back from the old elitists that only want to do things their way.

Bradley/Alex is gonna be bad ass, I'm counting down the days. Hopefully bradley can pull it out and go to the uk for a khan showdown if khan will really take the fight.

I agree about vegas holding boxing back, but over 40,000 in attendance for a fight in dallas is "lackluster"? Any time u get 40,000 thousand people to come see a boxing match live seems like a pretty bad ass turn out far as I can tell.

Good post Ironside.I live in Vegas and i agree with a lot of your points, but to dismiss the recession here means you have not seen the struggle i have, our official unemployment rate is 15 percent, add to that people not collecting unemployment bump that to 25 percent, that means 1-4 people are out of work here thats rough, our construction has died, are gaming is dying, and there is not much being done about it,no new industry,a house that costed 500000 two years ago goes for around 120 k right now.

Ufc is based out of las vegas, and they rarely do big arenas, not hard to sellout 5000 seats.

Hey I don't doubt its bad living in Vegas. Its hard times right now for most people. Don't doubt you get my point but boxing pulling people into Vegas has been going downhill since way before the Lehman Brothers collapse. Vegas itself was a draw for ********, much like Amsterdam is a draw for potheads (no offense), and that draw made boxing come to town.

Its not all about the recession. Its also to do with what people like to do and people liek to watch a sporting event in a large arena and Vegas is too far for a lot of us.
