Hating on Christmas Eve... gotta give it to you, that's commitment. As for your question:

Pacquiao declares all-out war vs human traffickers
                  by Raul S. Beltran
                  Thursday, 26 August 2010 18:16

HIT them and hit them hard then knock them out in the first round.

This is what Sarangani Rep. Manuel Pacquiao, a holder of seven world boxing titles, wants to do with human traffickers and illegal recruiters who, he said, continue to victimize hundreds, if not thousands of Filipinos, who want to seek greener pastures abroad.

In his second privilege speech Wednesday, the reigning world welterweight champion, challenged his fellow congressmen to declare total war against such criminals in a fight that “needs no referee.”

“Let us declare an all-out war against these syndicates right in this very chamber. If we will unite, we can knock them out in the first round in our (respective) districts,” Pacquiao said.

Explaining the difference between a human trafficker and an illegal recruiter, Pacquiao expressed alarm over the 2010 report of the United States State Department placing the Philippines in the Tier 2 watch list for the second time.

If the authorities will not act, Pacquiao said the country could land in Tier 3 of the ranking, placing it in the same category as Somalia and Myanmar, two of the world’s poorest nations.

“This is a huge embarrassment for our country,” he added.

Describing himself as an overseas Filipino worker, Pacquiao explained that his only difference from the other OFWs is that he has an assured job contract whenever he leaves for abroad.

On the other hand, he said, many OFWs, particularly the women, who leave the country are not as lucky, finding slave-like jobs in foreign lands with cruel and abusive employers who pay them -- if ever -- with the salaries not stipulated in their contracts.

As a start, Pacquiao called for amending the Anti-Trafficking Act of 2003, describing it as “toothless” to deter human trafficking.

He also called on the House committee on appropriations and the Department of Budget and Management to give an allocation to the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) which has a zero budget.

He noted there were only 18 convictions of human traffickers since the law was passed in 2003 while there are more than 800 similar pending cases that have yet to be resolved by the courts.

Pacquiao to help build hospital in Sarangani

SARANGANI – Representative Manny Pacquiao pledged to help the Aquino administration in constructing the first-ever hospital in this province.

Pacquiao announced to his constituents Thursday the P200-million commitment by President Benigno Aquino III for the construction of the hospital in Alabel town here.

Sarangani residents usually seek medical treatment in the nearby General Santos City due to lack of medical facilities in the province.

Aside from the hospital, Pacquiao was also able to get a donation of eight ambulances from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO). It was learned that the donation was given in exchange for his endorsement of the PCSO.

The Provincial Government, meanwhile, pledged to secure funds for the operation of the soon-to-be-built provincial hospital.

Operation expenses are estimated to reach as much as P50 million annually.

The province has an annual budget of slightly over P300 million, with more than P149 million coming from its share of the Internal Revenue Allotment from the National Government. (Ben O. Tesiorna)

                  Manny Pacquiao supports Save Act

The accomplishments of Manny “PacMan” Pacquiao in boxing may be legendary, but his greatness is still unfolding outside the ring. We applaud his sense of nationalism in helping the government lobby for passage of a bill in the US Congress that promises to revive the moribund Philippine garments industry. If the bill passes, exports of local textiles and apparels to the US could again reach $3 billion, creating some 600,000 jobs in the Philippines. And according to a website about the bill, it is expected to attract $480-million worth of foreign investments for factories within the first two years of the measure’s implementation.

The “Save Our Industry Act,” or simply “Save Act,” proposes to provide duty-free entry of Philippine-made textiles and apparel into the US if those goods are made of American raw materials. The tariff will be reduced to 50 percent if the Philippine garments used materials from sources other than the United States. US Senate Bill 3170 was introduced earlier in March and has been referred to a committee, and there were reportedly more than one version of the measure making their way through the American legislature.

                  ...

Passing laws is never easy, which is why The Manila Times is pleased to hear that Rep. Pacquaio of Sarangani will appear in a new infomercial pushing for passage of the Save Act. The video is expected to go viral, complementing a host of initiatives to lobby for the bill, including campaigns on social networking sites, like Facebook and Twitter, and elsewhere in the Internet calling on Americans to write their respective congressmen and senators in Washington, D.C., asking for support.

Also, Rep. Pacquiao is endorsing the Save Act for free, according to the Board of Investments (BOI). The world of boxing already knows of the greatness of this Filipino, who came from humble origins to win eight championship belts in as many weight divisions. But it seems that we are just beginning to appreciate his big heart.

He's also planning on using his Margarito winnings to build a University. Not bad for a congressman in his first year, huh?

I didn't know you needed to be a congressman to fund the construction of a hospital and a university.
