I will tell you EXACTLY where it came from.
There are massive online game communities that are dedicated to nothing but online video games.
In some of these video games, players are pitted against each other in battles, sometimes the looser, looses his character, all his items, and all the time invested ( TONS). I know I admittingly am part of a lot of these games. Diablo2- Dark Age of Camelot- City of Heroes- Everquest.
It is within these games that a lot of " l33t " speak came to be used often. Way back about 3 or 4 years ago in diablo 2- people would always talk **** and kill each other, (much like these forums minus the killing) after killing someone people would say OWNED SON or some **** liek that. Well a lot of the kids couldnt type and would hit the p and it came out pwned. It caught on and has been used ever since.
It proabaly was around way before that, but it because almost normal everyday language on these games. And it is still used very often.
