I just can't imagine a full blown story mode in an EA Sports game being very good.
Whilst I'd usually agree with your concerns, this doesn't look like something that's half ársed, this story mode is clearly the champion feature (no pun intended) of the game, they've clearly gone through a lot of effort to produce cinematics with full voice overs, which from the trailers, look pretty well written. Of course, until the final game is out, we really don't know, but from the looks of it, this dramatic "Rocky like" story mode they're creating looks like an angle to try and reach a more broader audience, rather than just boxing or sports fans (like people who may not like boxing, but like boxing films such as Rocky and...well that's it). I really like the Brother v Brother storyline that appears to be shaping up in it.
So yeah, I don't think EA will cheap out on this, I think they'll do it properly and execute it well. EA own enough studios and have enough resources to do so.
And remember, it's only one part of the game, they've still got legacy mode which has been improved, and online mode, exhibition, create a boxer, etc.
