People are impulsive: With the recent release of "The Fighter" there's inevitably going to be a temporary influx of casual fans around this time at least curious about the sport while the memory is still fresh.
People always want to be a part of something big/important: This would have been the best time to have a super fight (if not THE super fight) when boxing is in the mainstream and interest would be at an all time high. This type of situation only comes around every so often.
Imagine what it could have been, casual interest spillover from "The Fighter" hype from Mark Wahlberg a celeb/boxing fan, hype from a 24/7, hype from the match-up itself. It would have been big for everyone and the boxing world missed out on a prime opportunity...
...but thankfully, people are also forgetful and there's always another chance when the blu-ray is released a few months later and the cycle repeats. There's still time to cash in big
