Okay, a couple of weeks old, but I finally got to catch it.
How many heavyweight bouts have you ever seen? Me, I've probably seen maybe 100, 200. Certainly no more than 300. Can't remember 'em all offhand, but I've certainly never seen worse. A dire, listless affair, the sort of fight that would make you fondly reach for your John Ruiz megamix collection.
I had it a lot closer than the judges, 115-113 in Rahman's favour, though as I was half asleep throughout I don't suppose it matters.
Barrett claimed in trade magazines that he was going to do anything and everything to win, dig deep and go hell for leather. Monte Barrett's lying purpose. Instead a man so soft-hitting even Chris Byrd s******s at him spends most of the rounds trying to outbox Rahman. A nice idea... if it had worked. Barrett floats like a bee and stings like a butterfly and Rahman clumsily lunges in. Somewhere in the world Vitali must have skid marks in his pants at the thought.
Some drama in the fourth round... an ice bucket is accidentally knocked over. Jay Nady seems incredibly pissed off and constantly manhandles both fighters, and probably should have took points off Barrett after all those warnings. Nady actually contributed more to the fight than either boxer, the most booed fight I've ever heard.
I tried thinking of a worse heavyweight match-up than this... Frank Bruno wrestling John Ruiz, maybe? No.. this was the pits.
All throughout the fight there was a sign in the middle of the ring saying "Don King - only in America". Thank God for that. 2/10, awful.
