Comments Thread For: Boxing’s Best Gloves Forward: Pre-118, 140 Report Card

by Cliff Rold - Maybe Super Middleweight, with its “Super Six” and its Montreal mega-draw in Lucian Bute, could give them a run for their money.

    Maybe.

It’s still probably not enough to do better than third. In the race for the distinction as the best weight class of boxing’s seventeen in 2010, the leaders are fairly clear. Showtime goes with the Bantamweights on Saturday night. HBO goes with the Jr. Welterweights.

Given the more proven veterans of the smaller class, Bantamweight probably holds the edge in terms of quality right now. In terms of depth, and youth, nothing quite trumps 140 lbs. right now.

Bantamweight has some of the best fighters in the world today. Jr. Welterweight, more than any other class, is the place to look for tomorrow’s potential pound-for-pound kings. In a year where it seems all of the best was saved for last, this weekend is a chance to satiate the hardcore base and show off the best of the sport in the ring to any casual passer by. With boxing’s two major U.S. networks both featuring doubleheaders, it’s no guarantee that fans will see four great fights. [Click Here To Read More]

I always love your report cards, as it seems you really take your time to analyze each possible strength, weakness, and outcome. I wonder why you didn't do Ortiz-Peterson? I think that is the weekend's true toss-up, but it has largely gone under the radar with most fans. Anyhow, ballsy pick on Maidana! I think Khan destroys him in 6, but I hope you're correct.

Yeah, you're right. I'd go with a B for intangibles. That pick is looking worse everyday.

I've been a fan of Agbeko for a minute, but that inactivity is scaring me. It's all good though, I'll ride with him.

Yeah, that typo was fixed. Meant to give Agbeko an A there as well. Given how much he gave of himself in his last four, he earned it.

                    Speed:

                    Khan, A+. Maidana, B-.

                    Power:

                    Khan, B+. Maidana, A+.

                    Defense:

                    Khan, B. Maidana, C-.

                    Heart:

                    Khan, A. Maidana, A+.

                    Chin:

                    Khan, C (at 140lbs, but D- at 135lbs). Maidana, B.

                    Stamina:

                    Khan, A. Maidana, C.

                    Best Punch:

Khan, the jab. Maidana, right straight.

                    Weaknesses/Disadvantages:

                    Khan - his chin.

Maidana - Lack of speed and defense. Poor stamina. Smaller size and reach. Possibly weight-drained. His style - he'll be walking onto Khan's punches due to his aggressive pressure-fighting style; Maidana's left hand is weaker and this is going to be exploited by Khan, who will be circling to Maidana's left away from his big right-hand.

                    Advantages:

Khan - Lightning-quick handspeed. World-class jab. Great footwork. Good defense. Great stamina and work-rate. Freddie Roach and a solid game-plan. Under-rated power. Size and reach advanatage.

Maidana - Concussive power. Great heart.

My prediction: Khan wins by TKO, round 11.
