Pontiac is actually closer to the most affluent areas in Michigan than it is to Detroit.

Yup. I'm from Michigan and going to numerous Tiger games, I've been through bad parts of Detroit. It really wasn't that big a deal to me.

Pontiac isn't the greatest of suburbs, but it's near some of the nicer ones, and the crime is nowhere near what it is in parts of the city.
