Anticipation builds for boxing most anticipated matchup
By Ron Borges, Boston Globe Staff Writer
Boston – According to Irishman Kevin McBride’s trainer Pascal Collins, a John Ruiz versus McBride appears very close to coming to reality. Collins told the Boston Globe “Our lawyers are looking at the contract” offered by Ruiz’ promoter Don King. King's contract does not include provision for training expenses for McBride and guaranteed minimums for future bouts and McBride’s handlers are hoping that these terms could be included in any agreement. King has met McBride's team twice in recent weeks while Ruiz's management has also spoken to the Tyson conqueror’s representatives. The potential bout has fight fans salivating over the excitement that would be generated from this bout. The fight would feature John Ruiz the dominant champion of the division since Muhammad Ali held that same title 30 years ago and Kevin McBride, considered the heir apparent to Ruiz and widely considered far and away the most threatening challenger. Ruiz trainer Norman Stone has already voiced his concern “McBride grapples a lot, hopefully we can have a referee who can do his job.” Most boxing analysts agree that for McBride to dethrone the beloved champion he is going to have to turn the fight into a wrestling match and stay away from trying to box someone who is often called “the Sweet Scientist” in reference to Ruiz mastery over the sweet science. The bout could possibly take place in Boston, the home of Ruiz and the adopted home of Irishman McBride.
