Jermain Taylor:
I was high on him to begin with I must admit. He did manage to win he first couple of rounds against AA but even though he was in good condition he ended up losing on points before getting KTFO so that was a major dissapointment for me. After that he predictably pulled out.
Verdict: DOWN.
Mikkel Kessler:
I'm obviously a big fan of his. His loss to Ward was awful. Although I'd make a case for him being underprepared, having bad eyesight and a victim of terrible officiating the bottom line is that he looked terrible and failed to respond properly to adversity.
The bad eyesight to me became even more evident in the Froch fight where he took punches he would not have taken 2 years ago and missed punches he wouldnt have missed. Instead he dug down and proved his warrior heart and won a war. Since then he dropped out of the tournament and his career might be over following a bad eye injury.
Verdict: SOMEWHAT DOWN.
Arthur Abraham:
Looked like the man to beat after convincingly beating Taylor. After that he was outboxed by Dirrell and .... well.... exposed by Froch. He must now be in serious doubts in his own ability and looks headed for an asswhooping against Ward. Froch and Kessler responded well to defeat. Abraham didn't and his career at the top seems in jeopardy.
Verdict: DOWN.
Andre Dirrell:
Looked petrified in his first shot at the big time against Froch. Late in the fight he gained some confidence and he used that momentum to put on a little masterpiece against Abraham who he dominated for 10½ rounds. Since then he has claimed a somewhat questionable braininjury.
Verdict: SOMEWHAT UP.
Andre Ward:
Quite unknown going in. Soundly upset Mikkel Kessler in a surprisingly one-sided fight was a statement fight. A coming out party if you like.
Followed up with another dominating win over Taylor-replacement Allan Green. Only thing detracting from that performance is that Ward did not try to knock Green out in the last couple of rounds but that's a little academic. He has a bad habit of leading with his head that might cost him down the line when he is not blessed with the comfort of fighting at home.
Verdict: UP.
Carl Froch:
Even though he had some good wins against Pascal and Taylor going in Froch wasnt highly regarded. An ugly win over Dirrell in his first fight didn't really change that. After that he fought the best fight of his career by showing the skill to compete with Kessler along with the heart and grit to slug it out when the going got tough. Abraham in the last fight was easy. Or rather Froch made it look easy by sticking with his gameplan and not being lured into a brawl by the slugger Abraham. Abraham was surprisingly passive but that just might have been due to Froch's excellent footwork and jab.
Verdict: UP
