On Thursday afternoon, Bob Arum was in Glendale, California at the Filipino eatery Max's of Manila, where he was in town to promote his September 10th doubleheader at the Staples Center featuring Manny Pacquiao and Erik Morales.
But Arum was still working on other business while in town, namely finding an opponent for Floyd Mayweather Jr. on November 12th.
"We're trying to figure out a viable opponent," said Arum. "Obviously Winky Wright's taken himself out of the mix and so we're in serious discussion with the Zab Judah people."
As of now, Judah, the undisputed welterweight king, is the leading contender to face Mayweather in the fall.
"I would say without question. As a matter of fact I just got off the phone, two minutes ago, with Mr. King," said Arum around 1:15 in the afternoon on Thursday. "We're going to talk tonight."
After the Wright negotiations fell apart, Arum had pushed for Mayweather to fight WBO welterweight titlist Antonio Margarito.
"They don't want to fight him," Arum said. And why not? "I don't know."
Perhaps they look at Margarito as a bigger, stronger version of Jose Luis Castillo, who gave Mayweather all he could handle for 24 rounds in 2002. "Maybe," said Arum. "You figure it out, but the decision not to fight Margarito is based on a boxing decision."
But not a financial one?
"No, because he makes more from fighting Margarito than from any of those other guys because Margarito doesn't get as much," Arum explained.
As far as a timetable for a Mayweather-Judah bout being consummated, Arum said, "Hopefully, we'll get it done this week."
great news... but if you just made this up, then you should apply for a writing position here

He fought Duran when Duran was best p4p on the planet and then he had an imedaite rematch. If Duran chose not to train for the fight that falls on no one but Duran.
He didn't "have" to fight anyone. He chose to fight Hearns cause he was the next best guy.
In 1987 Marvin Hagler was considered the best p4p fighter in the world. Yes he wasn't as good as he used to be, but he was still considered the best p4p. Keep in mind it was Leonards first fight back in years.

That fight with Mugabi and Hearns took a LOT out of his career...
Just because a fighter is p4p #1 doesn't mean his age will ever get exposed..
