Ricky Burns Vs Roman Martinez 130lb WBO Title

EDIT I mean Andreas Evensen he beat Martinez already

Is this fight going to get televised? If it was some halfwit from California it would be all over the box. looks like a complete no-show. I'm getting a ticket if so. Still for sale.

Ricky Burns will use his first defence of the WBO super-featherweight title against Andreas Evensen to confirm he is superior in every department to fallen former champion Scott Harrison.

That is the verdict of Glasgow fight godfather Alex Morrison, who reckons his man will prove he is a cut above anything Harrison ever produced in his three-year reign as featherweight kingpin by handing Evensen his first stoppage defeat at the Braehead Arena on Saturday.

The world champion’s camp have been needled by remarks made by Harrison – currently still incarcerated in Spain – that he would thrash Burns if the two ever met head-to-head.

Morrison expects the Colombian-born, but naturalised Norwegian Evensen to be a handful, and said: “This is a chance to produce the type of perfor-mance that proves Ricky is a better boxer than Harrison ever was. To do that, Ricky must produce a really compact performance, where he is hard to hit but makes sure he is accurate with every punch he throws.

“We are not taking Evensen lightly and, as such, there will be no talk about what is planned for after this fight until it is done and dusted. But I know how much the first defence of his world title means to Ricky and I am expecting a career-best performance from him.

“He has the extra confidence from his victory over Roman Martinez, while he says he will not start feeling like a true world champion until he makes his first defence of the WBO belt.

“Evensen has never been down never mind having been stopped but, if Ricky can do both, it will send out a message. Harrison struggled against the two Colombians he fought and I am looking for Ricky to produce a performance on a far higher level from these fights.

“Ricky is first and foremost a superb boxer with one of the fastest jabs in British boxing and I am confident that will provide the foundation to an impressive win.”

But Morrison knows that although his man starts favourite for the return to the Braehead Arena – the venue Harrison made his private fight fiefdom during his reign as nine-stone king – Evensen’s big right hand will provide a clear and present danger.

Big Alex said: “This is a world title fight where Ricky is facing a guy with a proven knockout punch and Evensen will be very dangerous early on.

“Ricky is going to have to be circumspect and that is where it is vital his defensive boxing is at its best and must make sure he gets his left hand back after he throws the jab.

“But I have great belief in Ricky and I expect him to get the stoppage middle to late on. That said, in world title fights, you take the win any way you can get it.”
