Do you think Victor Ortiz expected to end Ortiz night early and go home with an easy Victory? Or do you think Ortiz knew what he was getting into when he signed to fight Maidana?
Do you think Victor Ortiz looked past Maidana?

no he was boxing beautifully at first then got baited into a shootout after knocking his opponent down 3 times. He thought he had it in the bag on numerous occasions.
honestly who didnt? Maidana was just one tough SOB. Maidana's heart+power just overwhelmed Ortiz.Comment

I don't think Ortiz looked past Maidana at all.
That's just a lame excuse from people who want to write Maidana off.
Fact of the matter Ortiz had reason to be prepared because Maidana had already proven himself a respectable fighter against Kotelnik, it was for an interim world title, it was on HBO and was therefore also his biggest payday.
Now what I can agree with is that Ortiz had no idea that Maidana was as tough as he was, nor as skilled as he was.
But when you say "looked past" you imply that he was lackadaisicale in his approach or his training and therefore lost a fight he should have won. I disagree, he simply lost to a superior fighter who broke his will, even at his very best.Comment

No doubt. The great matchmaker that is Golden Boy Promotions (2 things they do right, Match making and undercards) saw that Kotelnik beat him (likely thinking of Kotelnik as less than mediocre), and seeing that Maidana is just a sloppy puncher with no skill, they thought Ortiz would just fly right through him and knock him out in another solid, easy win on his way to progressing, which is why they made the fight. U know Ortiz knew this, that should come to no surprise. And after the second round Ortiz no doubt thought (came to a false realization) that anytime he landed that big shot, he would knock Maidana out, and so the rest of the fight he's trying to do it. Casual rookie mistake.
U can tell he improved on that cuz in the Harris fight, he had Harris down 3 times, and thought he could take him out real quick. Then Harris landed a right hand, and instead of trying to run through it and get the KO, he backed off and went back to boxing smart. Good for him
Maidana is overrated becuz if this win. No way he's 4th in the division.Last edited by JDezi4; 11-29-2010, 02:07 AM.Comment

He may have but maybe he overestimated himself, he seemed very sure that he had enough power to put Maidana away but when he wouldn't go away and kept coming at Ortiz it must have taken all of his confidence away and its possible he wasn't prepared for such a tough fight, decided it wasn't worth, and quit.Comment
