Why does weight of 140/147 matter for Pacquiao/Marquez?

Ricky Hatton came in at 145lb I believe, Marquez doesn't have to come in overweight. Your point?

The point is that Hatton is heavier than Mayweather on fight night. Yet people are saying that RH had no business at 147.

Nobody told Marquez where/how to come in....right? The higher weight only gave him more options, not fewer. Right?

Yet, it is said that Mayweather's win is less important because the fight was contested at the 147 limit.

Similarly, Marquez and Pac have similar fight-night weights. In fact (unlike floyd/ricky), Pac outweighs JMM by a few pounds. Pac is the naturally bigger man by about a half a division to a division. And we all realize that JMM is less effective at the higher weight than Pac is.

You have to treat the two matchups the same. Either the weight class didn't matter...or it does.

Listen. My point is Pacquiao will come in 146-148lb fight night regardless. He can easily make 140lb and rehydrate to the desired weight. Making the fight at either weight division makes no difference, maybe just psychologically.

Marquez is the one that wants this fight. He should know Pacquiao will come in at w/e weight he wants regardless if it's 140 or 147. Marquez can come in at w/e weight he wants as well

Margarito was going to come in at 160+ anyway so why the 150 catchweight?

I really don't see the big deal myself.

Both are within the same weight range at 147.

I just don't know who's stopping them from weighing below or near that limit.

and what I am saying is that you can switch the names Pacquiao and Marquez in your statement above for Mayweather and Hatton.

On fight night, Hatton was 154 and Mayweather was 148. Yet people say that Hatton was at a disadvantage fighting at 147.

I don't have a problem with the concept, per se. I'm merely pointing out your hypocrisy.

However, there IS one important component about the weight class (which prolly doesn't apply in this instance). Yes, a higher weight class gives you the option of not drying out to make weight. But you take the risk of the other guy being 155+ on fight night.

                  SilverSun,

                  Here is why it matters:

Manny has found out what Mayweather knew for a long time. It is very nice not to have to dry out on fight week and not to have to "make weight". You can eat and be comfortable and not put in extra work. That allows you to have more stamina on fight night.

Making the fight at 140 would force manny to do something he hasn't had to do in a couple of years. Perhaps taking Pac out of his comfort zone.

In essence, JMM is asking Pac to do what Pac has been forcing his opponents to do.

After all, if a few pounds didn't matter, why did they force Cotto to come down to 145? RIGHT?

JMMs ring weight last night was 145. Pacs last was 148. JMM/Pac3 at 147 seems reasonable to me now although I'd have no problem with it being at 144. It's not like MP is going to rehydrate up to 160, JMM and Pac fight at the same weight it appears. All roads lead to Manny Pacquiao, evidenced by every significant boxer from 135-160 wanting to be his next dance partner. See if you can beat Pac at his best, not one that's weight drained like the Pac hatred like to attribute to his recent opponents, then there can be no excuses. Let's get it on, Pac/JMM 3!!

For the Margarito fight, Pacquiao was on a ridiculous diet and an extreme training regimen. Pacquiao barely came in at 144.6lb. Pacquiao can eat comfortable and not wake up in the middle of the night to drink those high calorie shakes vs. marquez. I really don't see the big deal. Both men will weigh around the same come fight night
