What do you consider effective aggression?

Occasionally there are rounds where one fighter isn't doing much and one fighter is just coming forward, throwing but not landing cleanly, and then when its debated on here posters will say that the fighter coming forward couldn't have won which ever round because his aggression wasn't effective.

Now for aggression to be effective do clean punches have to land necessarily? Lets suppose very few clean shots do get in with an aggressive fighter who is willing to throw at least when his opponent just wants to play it safe and defend. If an opponent is at least concerned, always backing away, and not being offensive because of what his aggressive opponent is doing isn't the opponents aggression effective in limiting an opponent's offense and can we score that round for him failing any "clean effective" punches landed?

Good question. I can tell you what "ineffective" aggression looks like......just watch the first 7 rounds of Mayweather vs Hatton.

if it does have the effect of turning off the offense of the opponent, I'd say that an agression can be somewhat effective without clean punches landed

but minimal effective work, or few clean punches, will always beat agression without the clean, accurate punches landing in my book

I've just watched Pat Valentino vs Ezzard Charles, and that's exactly it : Valentino's agression backed up Charles and limited his punch output a bit, but Charles still landed the cleaner shots and by far, so I wouldn't call Valentino's agression very effective, because it couldn't win him rounds or hurt Charles...

Clean, effective punches and punch volume are all that really matter to me when i'm scoring. I don't care if a guys pressing the action the whole time if he's getting tagged with good shots while doing it.

The rounds Pacquiao won against Clottey were won on effective aggressiveness because if you would've went clean punching and defense, Clottey would have won the rounds.

There's other examples of it and it's mainly with solid defensive fighters that are outworked.

Effective aggression involves landing yes, but it's also equally about making the opponent fight your fight or run from you, controlling the pace of the fight. If your pressure and the punches that come with it are taking your opponent out of their game, then that's effective aggression.

Of course you do have to land punches to win rounds with it, but that comes with taking your opponent out of his game.

I understand, but if you are being aggressive and pressing the action but getting smacked around, you aren't being effectively aggressive, so that's ineffective aggression. Effective aggression leads to clean, effective punches being landed for you.
