  • Pacquiao Far From Ready For Marquez

Ring Magazine featherweight champion Manny Pacquiao gave millions of his countrymen to whom he is a hero and a national treasure an evening of unforgettable thrills with his fourth round knockout of gallant Thai contender Fahsan 3K Battery, but in the eyes of his corner and members of Team Pacquiao as well as respected boxing men Pacquiao was far from ready to take on WBA/IBF champion Juan Manuel Marquez in their much-awaited rematch scheduled for February 26 by international promoter Murad Muhammad and HBO Sports.

While Pacquiao demonstrated his devastating punching power to ultimately put an end to the visibly smaller Fahsan, his timing was off and he was clearly not in condition as he appeared to be breathing heavily through his mouth as early as the third round, showing that the two weeks of intense training under Freddie Roach were far from adequate for a tough fight. Although Roach didn’t indicate he was too disappointed with Pacquiao’s performance he has made it clear that he would “like to see Manny leave for LA the day after Christmas if that is possible” so he could get to work right away in preparation for the Marquez rematch, reminding Pacquiao that the champion “is right now training at an altitude of ten thousand feet and is a condition freak” and is determined to erase the ignominy of his three knockdowns in the first round last May. While Manny needs to be at the state of preparedness in facing JMM as he was when he faced Barrera, Ronnie, there's also the matter of over-training!

Give Pac the break he deserves! He needs that. Boxing is as much Psychology as Physiology.

Manny could peak too early if he begins too early, after all he was down to 125 lbs when he faced Fahsan! He should be given his Birthday, Xmas and New Year's breaks; but having said that, he should not have anything to do with a reality TV series with Robin Padilla any time between now and Feb. 26.

Don't press the guy too much Ronnie! Relaxing between fights is an essential part of boxing! Three weeks off shouldn't be too much to give Manny, as long as he does some road work and sporadic limbering exercises, as well as avoid bad diets and bottles of beer, during that period.

Hey, even a gym rat like a Hopkins takes it easy after a fight!

If Marquez is doing his roadwork in high altitudes, then Manny should do his roadwork in a similar elevation. Maybe spend Xmas and New Year in Bagiou, or somewhere else in the Cordilleras, with his family.

But he should be given a chance to spend some time with his family; emotional support system, you know.

Hard to admit but he did cram for 3 weeks enough to dispose of 3k but not for the caliber of JMM. Note that FR wants him to train for JMM asap. No more christmas break if possible because JMM is killing himself in training right this very moment in the high altitudes while the pacman continues with his BS ways in showbiz, ****fights ,pools and cardgames. Damn, I hate to say this but now is the time work and no more celebrations and distractions.

if this is true then pacman needs to get back to training as soon as possible. props to team pac for being honest about their wards actual condition. they should continue to make him work harder, more focused and dedicated like he had never been. a less than 100% pacquiao is not going to make the cut against marquez.

however, i don't want to speculate that manny is going to turn deaf on freddie's instruction to train early. the fact that freddie went personally to the philippines to supervise his training is enough indication that team pac is doing what they exactly need to do to prepare for the biggest hurdle in manny's career -- his fight against jmm in february

I think PAC deserves a Holiday break, but starting January 1st, 2005, he should move his butt to FR's Wild Ward Gym to start full time training....
