I was recently watching the weigh-in for the Sergio Martinez and Paul Williams rematch for the Middleweight championship. The weights were announced with Martinez weighing 157.5 pounds and Williams coming in lower at 156 pounds.
After both were tallied up, they did what every other fighters do in this situation. They squared off for the face-to-face photos from the press. Watching these two supremely conditioned men face off, I could only think of one thing to say;
Thank you.
Rarely, when watching these situations do you actually see two men have the look that both men had in their eyes. Watching the clip, you could feel what they were thinking. Both men know they can win. Both men know they have to win. And both men KNOW -- whether or not they would ever admit it -- that losing isn't impossible for either.
Still, even with the potential for the biggest loss of their respective careers looming in the air, both men had the confidence you hope to find in all top fighters. Williams, the no nonsense type that he is was dead-pan in his stare-down. Martinez, a brash fighter with a smirk on his face, but a look in his eyes that meant nothing but business.
Both men, you can see from their expressions, genuinely dislike each other. Which is unique in the sense that both men aren't the sports biggest *******s. You even get the sense that years after both have retired, they will fondly look back at their rivalry and series of confrontations. But now, right now, they want nothing more than the hurt each other.
Both men are poised. Both men are in the primes of their careers. Both men can win and are going into the bout feeling that victory is at the end of their punches.
Many return bouts fail to live up to their preceding fight. This fight, with these two fighters having the right attitudes and the skills, could give you something even better.
As ungrateful as most sports fans are, you should be thanking the boxing Gods you'll get to witness them trying to top themselves.
