..You Should Feel Blessed That Martinez-Williams II Is Taking Place...

I was recently watching the weigh-in for the Sergio Martinez and Paul Williams rematch for the Middleweight championship. The weights were announced with Martinez weighing 157.5 pounds and Williams coming in lower at 156 pounds.

    After both were tallied up, they did what every other fighters do in this situation. They squared off for the face-to-face photos from the press. Watching these two supremely conditioned men face off, I could only think of one thing to say;

    Thank you.

Rarely, when watching these situations do you actually see two men have the look that both men had in their eyes. Watching the clip, you could feel what they were thinking. Both men know they can win. Both men know they have to win. And both men KNOW -- whether or not they would ever admit it -- that losing isn't impossible for either.

Still, even with the potential for the biggest loss of their respective careers looming in the air, both men had the confidence you hope to find in all top fighters. Williams, the no nonsense type that he is was dead-pan in his stare-down. Martinez, a brash fighter with a smirk on his face, but a look in his eyes that meant nothing but business.

Both men, you can see from their expressions, genuinely dislike each other. Which is unique in the sense that both men aren't the sports biggest *******s. You even get the sense that years after both have retired, they will fondly look back at their rivalry and series of confrontations. But now, right now, they want nothing more than the hurt each other.

Both men are poised. Both men are in the primes of their careers. Both men can win and are going into the bout feeling that victory is at the end of their punches.

Many return bouts fail to live up to their preceding fight. This fight, with these two fighters having the right attitudes and the skills, could give you something even better.

As ungrateful as most sports fans are, you should be thanking the boxing Gods you'll get to witness them trying to top themselves.

    This is what is expected.

When the two best teams play in other sports, nobody gives them extra credit for it.

After the crappy last year of boxing we've had, they OWE the fans fights like this every month.

And that's all well and good. But, when boxing fans finally get what they want, everyone on this board talks about two other g****ing guys who aren't even fighting any time soon or each other for that matter.

We shouldn't be blessed or grateful for it. We should expect it. Boxing is the only sport in the world in which two of the top guys don't immediately face each other and instead spend years studiously avoiding each other. It is only getting worse. It used to be that the top ten fighters in the division would just about all have fought each other, and the best contenders would fight the champions. It just doesn't happen that way any more.

This fight used to be the complete norm. Now it's a rarity. A risky fight, both guys with the possibility of losing, for a title....This should be expected and yet it's not anymore.

Promoters, managers etc have been able to get away with just spinning **** more and more and keeping their money makers protected to the point that we don't bat an eyelid when the top guys fight pointless fight after pointless, and then when we do have two of the top fighters face each other, and in a rematch of a close fight at that, we are supposed to be thankful for it?

The only reason these guys are doing is because of us. We are paying for their careers and we should be thanking boxing's corrupt promoters for this fight? It's a sad time in boxing when we have to be thankful for the fact that two of the top fighters actually fight each other. It's become so unusual (instead of being nothing slightly out of the ordinary as it should be) for the two top guys in a division to fight each other that it's a rarity now. It shows just how low boxing has gone and far away from what it used to be when that was not even thought about because that's just what was expected. When you are the best, you fight the next best.

I didn't say anything to the contrary of this. What I'm saying is that it's not happening. And these two guys have constantly called out the best and have constantly taken risks. Both have chased the dream of being the best fighter they can be.

Having two guys like that, in this climate, is something to be very thankful for.

Furthermore, I was stressing much more than the best fighting the best. It's about how baldy these two want it. The two best fighters in the world -- Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather -- might not be able to deliver that type of stare down. It's much more than the best fighting the best.
