    Danny Green vs. BJ Flores

    Danny Green wins UD. (118-111):

I timed my sleep last night so I could watch DG v BJF. The fight started and stayed digitally flawless through a streaming site. Hats off to streaming sites - I'm getting close to nixing my cable company all together.

I think Green won the fight but the gap in scoring between the fighters was exaggerated (avg 118-111). It doesn't matter though because Flores did something in this fight that is very very rare. He went into the fight in his best condition, picked his best sequences, practiced his fundamentals as best he could but still lost. When it was over, BJ treated the host fighter and his fans like royalty. Joshua Clottey gave much respect to Pacman regarding Manny's neutralization of his offense but BJ FLores did it even better. He thanked everyone for every minute but got a little creepy with the Danny hugs....just sayin.

So this fight was basically Green fighting in a style that I would describe as a cross between Floyd Mayweather and Sergio Martinez. He backpedaled 30 of 36 minutes, lured BJF onto the ropes, used every part of his arms to block BJF shots and quickly sprang out with wonderful flurries. His single punches landed very crip to BJF's head many times which excited the crowd and prompted the judges to score it heavy in Green's favor.

HBO please take note that it would be nice to have microphones in the ring with no announcers on a third PPV channel. Right now my choices are standard def and high def and a third would be appreciated. Showtime is much better for ring sounds but still..... I know you can do it!

The fight: I felt that had I been in Flores corner I would have told him going into the 10th round that he needed to get fluid with the cross uppercut cross combination and get exclusive with the power uppercut when I say now. He needed to be better prepared when he arrived inside on Green. Flores has good communication with his corner but they were telling him what to do instead of which sequence to use. He is a smart guy who has plenty of cardio so he should have a dozen sequences memorized that include 7 to 15 punch combinations with speed variations built-in. In this fight with Green, Flores seemed to bounce around trying to figure out how to fire first but he was waiting just a half second too long to decide his approach. This was understandable - Green had nailed him over and over again with "crackin" hooks. Instead of getting off first, BJF would have to use his reflexes to counter a hard DG hook. Green not only threw hooks - he was leaping long like Marciano really making the big sound for the judges. Danny Green is 37 years old and yes he is the real deal. Green controlled the terrain, attacked from the flanks and was much more comfortable than his opponent was. I was upset over what Green and that referee did to RJJ, but now after watching this fight, I am glad for Roy. Green's power over 12 rounds could have seriously hurt Jones Jr.

For Green's next match-up I would like to see him fight Huck and then after that move to HW to fight Haye. Green and Haye would make for a fantastic fight!

BJF should try and hop right back in with Cleverly or Cloud. He seemed to give all he had on this fight so many more international trips are going to come his way. The way he treated Green's fans was very impressive - Him trying to climb the corner ropes after the last bell was halllllarious!

Nice post. I give credit to DG; but, I also think that was the most uninspired BJ Flores I've ever seen. Some of it may very likely have been due to Green's neutralization, by both solid defense and distance; but I also think that BJ was hoping to "just do enough" to win rounds, and by doing so let Green steal several in the last 30 seconds. I did think that the judges scores were a tad wide, all things considered. It will be interesting to see where Flores' management takes him next. I don't see Green trying to make the move to HW anytime soon.
