Hopkins and Tszyu lost to undefeated, highly regarded contenders.

Tyson's loss was less an upset than a wake-up call.

Kassim Ouma's loss comes to mind, as I didn't see anyone calling that.

A lot of people thought Winky Wright would beat Trinidad, but not in the manner that he did...

Based on all that, it's hard for me to single out particular fight as "upset of 2005" so far

I see you added a poll. Now I'm thinking this is a gag thread with "Lacy over Reid" as a selection.

I shouldn't have wasted my time replying...

Hopkins really won the fight so it doesnt count in the poll. So I vote for Ricky Hatton.

also, how can you call mayweather gatti an upset?
are you crazy??? mayweather was favored to win that fight!

i voted for taylor v hopkins, just because of the magnitude of the upset, but abviously hatton v tszyu was a big upset as well

Don't know how the Hatton win was a wake up call for Kostya Tszyu. Just months earlier he beat Mitchell and is regarded as one of the best at 140 of all time. He can still make a come back and I hope he does. However, that was definetly the upset of the year. I was watching the pre fight and many British fans even believed that Tszyu would win. It seemed split at the street polls they were taking, and this was in England. That and Kostya Tszyu was regarded as the favorite by many respected journalists and fans and not many people gave Hatton a chance against him. Most people thought it woulden't last 6 rounds. I woulden't vote for Hopkins vs Taylor because the boxing world was split at 50% on who the winner of the fight will be.

all up to the gatti fight, i kept hearing "gatti will KO floyd, gatti will KO floyd, gatti will KO floyd" and all that bull****. regardless of weather or not PBF was favored to win that fight, its still an upset because so many people expected him to win.

Gatti vs Mayweather shoulden't be considered an upset. Everyone knew that Gatti stood no chance. There was hope, but only a fool's hope that Gatti would KO floyd. Mayweather vs a 5 to 1 favorite on the books and most of the people that wanted him to win are the same people that put money on him. Same with McBribe vs Tyson, most of the people who wanted McBribe to win were the people who put money on the 4 to 1 odds they got, including myself
