Comments Thread For: Ibragimov's Ex-Manager: Atlas Saved Povetkin From Defeat

Boris Grinberg, the ex-manager of former world champion Sultan Ibragimov, says trainer Teddy Atlas made the right decision by pulling Alexander Povetkin from a scheduled fight with WBO, IBO and IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko. Povetkin was going to face Klitschko in September, but was later replaced by Samuel Peter.

Teddy Atlas did the right thing, Povetkin management should have shedueld more fights for povetkin in his first 2 years as a pro. I hope its not to late for Povetkin, hope Atlas can get him a World Title.

Tunney thinks this is a ***ish plot to stop Povetkin from succeeding.

Hard to disagree with that article.

But, unless there is a clear roadmap to get to Wladimir Klitschko.....
then maybe Povetkin should return to the am's.

What does Atlas have in mind ?

Atlas is an idiot...Povetkin "not ready"? Give me a ****ing break. Povetkin is one of the most decorated amateurs in history of boxing, multiple-time world champ, youth world champ, Olympic SHW gold-medalist. He is a 31 years old and has been boxing pro for almost 6 years. It's his fault that he hasn't fought more than 15 fights, he should have had at least 25-30 fights in that period. If Povetkin is not ready now, he'll never be. If I remember correctly, Ali got beat by a guy with only 8 fights under his belt and he didn't have the extensive amateur background that Povetkin has.

You fight pro to get to a title shot and then make some money, then make a legacy. Povetkin missed out on a $2.5 million payday, I doubt he'll ever see that kind of payday ever again in his life. I aslo doubt that Povetkin will ever get a title shot again with the way he has regressed since Atlas took over.

Finally, who says that a loss is so bad? If a fighter is great he will bounce back from that loss stronger than before. Lewis did it, Vitaly did it, Wlad did it. Every great fighter except for Marcianno or Calzaghe, has lost at least once but they all learned from that loss. Sultan's trainer is talking like Povetkin would have died if he lost to Wlad. That's the problem with boxing today, too many prima donas masquerading as the best afraid to get that loss on their record (Mayweather). That's why appreciate guys like Glenn Johnson, he has a bunch of losses but so what, he is still one of the best.

Atlas ruined Povetkin cause of his ego, he couldn't be able to live with himself if one of his fighters lost to a Klitschko after all the **** he has talked about them and still does. You all have to remeber how much Atlas hates the Klitschkos, he said that he could take the right HW and train them to beat the Klitschkos because they had no skills, just size (his exact words). Well he got that HW in Povetkin, one of the best skills you could ask for, but he knows now that is not enough and too scared to let his fighter fight them because it might damage HIS ego.

Sasha, before it's not too late, dump Atlas, he is ruining you.

Atlas is probably right that Povetkin isn't ready but the real issue is what he's doing to get him ready. Lining up 3 bums in 3 months? Fantastic. If he keeps doing that we should see Klitschko-Povetkin in about 2035.

I agree with you 100%! Who knows. I don't think he will ever be ready personally.

How will he ever be "ready".

It's not as if Povetkin is gonna get in the ring with Wlad and say to himself 30 seconds into the fight, "Sure I can get my right hand over this jab. no problem, this is just like fighting Teke Oruh!".

The best way Povetkin can prepare is to pick out his coffin and a nice suit of clothes because with his style he is gonna get killed whenever the time comes when Atlas believes he is ready to walk the plank.
