A tidbit for you all in relation to Margarito/Pacquiao...

This isn't something I just discovered, it's something that's always stuck out in my mind. It is a comment made by Jim Lampley and Larry Merchant during De la Hoya/Pacquiao fight (December 2008).

Keep in mind the boxing picture in or around the welterweight division was the following:

    Mayweather retired during Summer 2008

Cotto suffered his first defeat by bloody stoppage in the 11th at the hands of Mexican brawler Antonio Margarito

Margarito became the de facto ruler of the division having beaten the best fighter of the division.

Pacquiao was a career featherweight with only a single recent fight at lightweight who was jumping up TWO weight classes to take on Oscar de la Hoya. Many insiders picked De la Hoya to win and considered the fight a farce, 17/20 Ring Magazine experts picked Oscar to win.

Remember, we all believed (if not all, the GRAND majority) that Pacquiao would lose. And even then, we believed that (should he win) he would've gone back to lightweight and continue to rule the 135 pound division. It's amazing how things turn out in retrospect. With all this in mind...

    Thoughts and comments?

Remarkable, isn't it? If you send your current you to that time and tell him about all the things Pacquiao's done, he wouldn't believe you. I wouldn't believe me!

During Clottey's ring entrance for his fight with Cotto, similar comments were made:

Lampley: We do not get unofficial weights after the weigh in here in New York, Emanuel Steward, but it was reported that 2 yrs ago in a fight against Diego Corrales in this division, Clottey went from 147 at the weigh-in to 170 at the time of the fight. Might he be attempting to hydrate to a high weight tonight?

Steward: Being a big guy, he comes in at 160 often after weighing-in at...even when he was at 140. So they both would probably come in big tonight.

Lampley: And though some see this fight as an audition for a matchup against Manny Pacquiao, the biggest money fighter in the sport, Pacquiao's smaller size, and the statistics we just cited regarding what happens when Clottey and Cotto come into the ring, may ultimately prevent that.

Then bam! 9 months later, Pac gets in the ring with Clottey and wins 11 out of 12 rounds.

Clottey is a big guy, thats old news but he doesn't have the offense of Margaresto. Clottey is missing the punch output and plaster-wraps, and the mediocre defense.

Regarding the comments by Lampley and Merchant, there is a big difference between now and than more for what has happened to Margarito, then how well Pac has done.

I wanted to post the same video before. Larry Merchant a big pac fan didn't see pac even go to the extent of fighting the tornado. Just shows you how much balls pac has. He keeps on proving everyone wrong.

But this fight is for me a hard fight for pac. Marga has a chance to win. Maybe Larry is right not to fight him. Time will tell on Sat.

Pac is a machine. No one back then would believe Pac would get in the ring with Margarito. It's funny cuz now, most fans thinks Margarito is gonna get KTFO lol

Exactly. So much has happened to Margarito since then. I maintain that the Margarito of 2008 would beat Pac's ass.
