Comments Thread For: “Fighting Words” – Juanma vs. Marquez: Baptism By Fire

by David P. Greisman - The fires within Juan Manuel Lopez and Rafael Marquez were fueled from within but fanned from afar, stoked by those who said that Marquez was shot and those who said that Lopez couldn’t take one.

Marquez’s is a flame that has not yet been snuffed. Lopez’s is a blaze that is burning strong. And a torch has been passed from old soldier to young gun, a torch passed, appropriately, via firefight.

They were opponents by circumstance, opposites by coincidence. Lopez donned blue trunks and shoes. Marquez was clad in red. Marquez’s offense is of orthodox origin. Lopez swings from a southpaw stance. Lopez represents Puerto Rico. Marquez fights out of that island’s longtime pugilistic rival, Mexico.

They had this in common: Both were featherweights with firepower who were determined to come forward.

That meant two things: Lopez and Marquez would both start out waiting for an opening and working to create one. And once the big punches started landing for one of them, the other would soon be responding with force.

Both worked behind jabs in the early moments, Lopez occasionally attempting to counter Marquez’s jab with a quick right hook. Marquez would lean forward, probing with a single shot and then pulling out of range. He had never been the kind of fighter who was afraid to get hit. But he didn’t need to take unnecessary punishment – unnecessary because he was not yet dishing it out himself. [Click Here To Read More]

I can't stand how some of these message board tough guys have been bashing Rafael Marquez, calling him a P*ssy and a quitter. The man went to war AGAIN, and then he had to pull out because of a injury. It happens.

He is everything that is right with boxing, he makes exciting fights and will fight anybody.

I'm a Juanma fan but I still admire the heck out of Rafael Marquez. I didn't think Juanma was going to beat him and I was very impressed on how Juanma performed.

I really want to see a rematch. I don't think Marquez pussied out of the fight. I don't think quitting is in his DNA.

As for a future fight between Juanma and Yurokis I now believe that the war prone Juanma is going to eat his azz.

I'll say it before, and I'll say it again.

            Most people here respect Márquez.

But his attitude after the fight was pure BS. He was on a mission to discredit Juanma's win. IF the injury was real, that's also part of the game. He was not willing to fight injured.

He is man enough to fight, but not man enough to admit he lost.

Just like his brother, who will tell anyone he is 2-0 against Pac.

Rafael Márquez won ONE ROUND. ONE ROUND and that's all.

Come on guys, Marquez quit because he knew he would be KTFO in the 9th, at no time during the fight did he show signs that the shoulder was hurting, not with the bombs he was throwing. Juanma was too much for him, he has to admit it and move on.....
