The X factor is the size of Margarito. Will it affect Pacquiao?
Whenever I think of pressure, I think of the relentless quick footwork I'm going to decapitate-you-with-one-punch strategy that Hatton applied and Pacquiao was able to deal with it.
I'm not saying Hatton is a better fighter or whatever, but again, Hatton was a better puncher at 140 than Margarito is at 154. Hatton was the type of guy who could buzz you and then knock you out with one punch or a few of them. Margarito beats you up ala Cotto. He needs time...
Margarito is slower in footwork and handspeed, Pacquiao should win. He might get punched because Margarito isn't Clottey, but Pacquiao will make Margarito respect him.
And Margarito will get hurt not because Pacquiao hits really hard, it's that he won't be able to deal with Pacquiao's speed.
EVERYONE who's had a crack at Pacquiao in the last years (Diaz, Oscar, Hatton, Cotto, Clottey) all the say the same thing. You might be able to try and anticipate Pacquiao's straight left, right hook, 1-2-1 combination and all that stuff Pacquiao does. But once they get in the ring, they can't deal with the speed. And for anyone who's been to a live fight before knows that watching fast fighters throw punches looks a lot faster up close than they do on television...much faster.
Pacquiao should be the favorite. Will weight play a role? Sure. Pacquiao might get tagged more than he did against Clottey. But Margarito's talk of "going all out" will only result in him getting knocked out faster.
Everybody does it, it seems almost gimmicky how Pacquiao wins because all this jumping around in weight classes causes people to fall into the trap of:
"I'm bigger, I can win."
or
"Pacquiao's fast, but we have fast sparring partners and we're training for speed."
Once they get in there, they think: "Who the hell is this guy and how is it possible that he's that fast?!"
Margarito's not going to go crazy. He's losing. I feel confident.
EDIT: I also don't trust Margarito's chin at this point coupled with his layoff. That nasty back-to-back punishment he took with Cotto and Mosley is the stuff of legends. Chins don't last for life, do they? That's not a rhetorical question. I'm really asking it. Can a fighter his chin all throughout his career? I don't believe so.Last edited by TintaBoricua; 11-07-2010, 03:37 PM.
