By Jake Donovan - Make no mistake about this – the next two months are absolutely loaded. This Saturday alone is well worth upsetting the spouse or significant other in declaring that you’re staying in for the night.

Whether you watch Showtime and TiVo HBO or vice versa, your Saturday night is action packed.

Even better is the fact that there are plenty of gems to be found between now and December 18.

That has never been disputed. Both Showtime and HBO deserve credit for ending 2010 with a ****.

But let’s not get it twisted – boxing fans needn’t drop to our knees and bow down to the boxing gods for delivering such a loaded stretch of fights.

We’ve waited 10 months for something to look forward to. Quite frankly, we’re entitled – if not long overdue – for a payoff like this.

The very marquee attraction for this weekend is in fact a fight that was supposed to come seven weeks ago, and – though through circumstances beyond control – helped contribute to one of the worst droughts in recent boxing history.

If all goes as planned, then the featherweight crossroads bout between Juan Manuel Lopez and Rafael Marquez at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada (Saturday, SHOWTIME 10PM ET) should prove to be a hell of a welcome back party for boxing fans who have relied on webcasts and Spanish-speaking broadcasts to get them through most of the fall season.

Even if not by design, SHOWTIME couldn’t have picked a better fight to get itself back on track on the championship level. There’s little to suggest that Lopez-Marquez will be anything short of a guaranteed punch out, be it one-sided or a brutal two-way slugfest.

It’s an added bonus that in the co-feature slot, we are offered the first Stage Three match of the Showtime Super Six World Boxing Classic, as “Super” subs Allan Green and Glen Johnson collide in a fight that determines who will join – and most like face – Andre Ward in the tournament’s semifinals. Great Article. I pay for HBO and Showtime every month just for boxing. If they don't start to put on quality cards on a "regular" basis then I'm done paying. I'll catch a stream for their broadcast.

Good point about HBO and Showtime having competing shows on the same night. How much better would it have been for the fans if they spread those shows out to all the many weekends when there was no boxing whatsoever?

Where would you consider Vic to be at in terms of career progression?

Lots of truth in this article. When the networks we pay for (HBO/SHOWTIME - some specifically just for boxing) starve us of the very thing we are paying monthly in hopes of seeing... the words of Eddie Murphy come to my mind - If a man is starving to death and you give him a saltine cracker, he's gonna lick his lips and fingers and say "THAT'S THE BEST DAMN CRACKER I EVER HAD!"

To top it off - and adding insult to injury amungst the drought of televised boxing, we end up with PAY PER VIEW bouts that should be aired for free (for those already paying for the subscriptions), like Mosely vs Mora and Hopkins vs Jones jr. IMO, it's like holding boxing for ransom. If you wanted to see what little was available (and the Main Events were terrible matchups to begin with), and because as boxing fans that's what we do - watch boxing... we were being forced to shell out even more money to pay for what we should have already been seeing in the first place (for paying for HBO/Showtime). It feels like extortion IMO. I know it's been explained to me that they are bouts that wouldn't be put on at all because the networks (claim) they couldn't afford to televise it, so PPV was the next best option. Maybe it's naive, but if certain networks didn't overpay some of these fighters (*cough* Berto/Kahn etc. *cough*) then maybe they would have more money to televise other deserving upcoming bouts.

Side note: The only plus to actually paying for the Mosely/Mora bout was the great undercards. If these networks want to force us to pay for PPV, they need to do a better job of putting on a great event EVERY SINGLE TIME. It should be the "norm" and not the "exception" to see great undercard match-ups. And, it should be the "exception" and not the "norm" for a boxing card to be a PPV, reserved for only the highest ranked and most anticipated fights.

              That's my two cents worth.

What a brutal stretch it's been. Maybe a bi-monthly ppv and a regular boxing after dark/shobox, spattered with world championship boxing 6 times a year didn't suck. With less money in the pot, all the stars just fight less. Which makes them less marketable, which makes for less money in the pot. Which means they fight less. Or the networks completly ignore the heavyweight division altogether. I hate the Klitschkos, but if the answer is to not show heavyweight boxing in north America, the sport is doomed. Sucks to think the next time a guy overwhelms and kos Wlad, it won't be shown here.
