Why wasn't Antonio Tarver able to follow up his victories over Roy Jones Jr. with substantial victories? Personally, I think Tarver ate, drank, and slept Roy Jones, it was like his whole purpose of being was to beat Roy lol. When he wasn't fighting Roy he wasn't hungry. I don't think he could have beat a prime Roy Jones, but no matter what Tarver will always be remembered for this, "You got any excuses tonight Roy, you got any excuses." Lol

In a small way, Tarver was like Chess great Bobby Fischer. His entire goal in life was to become World Chess Champion. Everything was geared towards that. It took him 20 years and once he accomplished that, he didn't know what to do anymore. So he lost it.
Tarver in boxing terms did the same. He made his debut in the light-heavy division when RJJ was at the top. He knows him from when they were young also.
Beating him meant more than winning the actual Undisputed LIght-Heavyweight Title. Once that was accomplished, everything went kaputt. He slacked off for the first Glen Johnson fight but managed to edge it out in the rematch.
He had stamina issues in the third Roy Jones fight but was lucky Roy Jones was gun shy. He started embracing his celebrity champion status more and got into doing movies and that cost him. And since then he's been toiling at the bottom looking to reclaim his 15 minutes of greatness ever since.Comment

It's ironic because part of the reason why Jones struggled so much in the 1st Tarver fight is because he had to lose all that weight after winning the heavyweight title from Ruiz. I guess Tarver got a taste of what that was like. Tarver should've pretended everyone he fought was Jones.Comment
