Comments Thread For: “Fighting Words” – Concussions, the NFL, and Boxing

by David P. Greisman - The debate now going on in the National Football League surrounding concussions and the changes being made to prevent them is, boiled down to its essence, the kind of debate that has taken place in sport after sport – including boxing.

Should the game be changed? And is the game still the game if it’s no longer the same?

Baseball extended its seasons – there went record after record in the sport most obsessed with historical numbers – and it added wild cards for the playoffs. Basketball added the shot clock, the three-point shot, and brought zone defense into the NBA. Hockey instituted the overtime shootout and allowed the two-line pass.

Football introduced instant replay, dropped it, and then brought it back again, this time with limitations on when and how often it could be used. And league officials constantly tweak rules both big and small. And all of the major American pro leagues have expanded and then expanded again, which some say has watered down the competition.

The NFL is cracking down on blows to the head, clarifying what hits are illegal and how illegal hits will be punished. This has happened primarily because the problem of concussions and their long-term effects, including degenerative brain conditions, is finally being put under the microscope.

That football is confronting this issue – and the direction in which the debate goes – is somewhat reminiscent of where boxing once was and could someday have consequences on what goes on with boxing in the future. [Click Here To Read More]

All these athlete's knew what they were getting into before they made the decision to play their sport. They seen the slug fests on TV, they see the big hits on the gridiron, they know what their sport is about.

    Leave the game alone!

What's the point of crying about people getting hurt trying to change their lives and doing what they love? Better to be sad for those who never do anything with their lives because they are afraid to take the risk.
Boxing has helped far more people then it has hurt.

It is pretty silly to try and "safely" play football, or boxing for that matter. The athletes sign up to be warriers and feel like gladiators. It's part of the appeal and part of what seperates the players and the fighters from the rest of the pac. You pay a certain price for everything you do in life, and these athletes know what they are getting into. It all seems pretty silly to me to "crack down" all of a sudden

Because they dont want guys dying in the ring and dying from boxing related injuries.

Ill be honest, im a guy who never boxed because i have a good mind and am a smart mother****er and dont need guys pounding on my head all day. If i wasnt smart as i am i would be boxing.

Thats what people said when they went from 15 rounds to 12. These arent all the suddne crackdown either.

In recent years you have all these studies on concussions and brain damage and it doesnt look good.

Plus theres no reason anybody should be hitting another player helmet to helmet in football

Lmao, classic last words. Although I've heard enough about concussions and for that matter Tiger Woods, still very entertaining read.

The #2 in the 10 count is an ATG paragraph man! Good shit!

Great article all around. Very good read. I actually think basketball has the best chance for concussions in sports actually. Because their constantly fighting for rebounds and when you get thrown to the hardwood your head is unprotected causing serious damage...

But it's cool to see how sports evolve over the years.

20 oz gloves and headgear for everybody. Im pretty sure these athletes know the risks they're taking by playing full contact sports. If its the players wanting to change the rules because they are genuinely scared of getting hurt thats one thing, but they dont need anyone telling them whats good for them.

The players have no real power in rules. It wasnt them that made catchers wear catching equipment and batters wear helmets in baseball.

It wasnt them that put more padding and switched from leather soft helmets in football

And it wasnt them that change boxing from 15 to 12 rounds.

Anyway the NFL hits they are complaining about are the illegal hit, so people shouldnt be complaining
