Chicago Tribune sports editor Arch Ward in 1923 conceived the idea of a city-wide amateur boxing tournament, to be sponsored by the newspaper. Each champion was awarded a miniature golden glove, which gave the tournament its name.
However, boxing became illegal in Illinois in 1924, so the tournament seemed to be a one-time event. In the meantime, the New York Daily News originated a similar championship tournament for amateur boxers on the East Coast in 1927.

The Illinois Legislature made boxing legal once more, primarily so the second Dempsey-Tunney fight could be staged in Chicago in September of 1927. The following year, the Golden Gloves tournament was revived, with the New York and Chicago newspapers holding their own area tournaments. Winners of those tournaments then fought for the national Golden Gloves championship.

Many other newspapers got involved during the 1930s, with each conducting a championship tournament leading up to regional and national championships.

The tournaments are now conducted by an independent organization, Golden Gloves of America, Inc. Profits are used to promote the development of amateur boxing.

Under the present organization only one Tournament of Champions is held. A new tournament site is selected annually. The Golden Gloves program for the United States is organized on a territorial basis to give all sections of the country representation. All tournaments are planned, promoted and directed by the Golden Gloves Charities and within the limits of the amateur code, and in keeping with Golden Gloves' high purposes and ideals. All profits go towards further development of amateur boxing which encourages a positive lifestyle for today's youth.

There are other amateur tournaments in the US such as the Silver Gloves, the Diamond Belt, Spanish Golden Gloves, AAU Regionals and Nationals, USA/ABF Regionals and Nationals. But the New York Golden Gloves was the most special of all US amateur tournaments because the New York Golden Gloves are held at Madison Square Garden where there used to be big crowds and actually a bigger thing was made of the New York Golden Gloves than the National Golden Gloves!

Apart from Golden Gloves, there are various arranged 'gym tournaments' in the US where different gyms compete against eachother (nothing official), and ofcourse there are the World Championships, Olympic Trials, Olympic Box-Offs, and Olympic Games too. But I think the New York Golden Gloves was the most special amateur title to hold for US boxers.

              Beginner Boxer

I am considering taking up boxing and would set as my ultimate goal (after much training and preparation of course) participation in the golden gloves of NYC. What exactly are the entrance requirements and what kind of background do participants typically have?

I think there must be some kind of regional gym tournaments that take place to determine who is good enough to get to the NYC Golden Gloves. Unfortunately I don't think the good ole NYC Golden Gloves have been as big or special for the last 15 years or so.

Thanks, quite frankly the worse it is probably the better off I am, I was just wondering what the prequalification structure if any was or if it was basically all comers
