“Paul Williams is the next big thing out there. Paul is number three pound-for-pound. Number two is Mayweather and number one is Pacquiao and neither one of those guys will fight Paul Williams,” remarked trainer George Peterson as he talked about Paul Williams and the difficulties they’ve had in securing a showdown with either of the two biggest names in the sport. Peterson made it clear that he strongly believes fighters like Mayweather and Pacquiao may say that they only want to fight the best, but their actions, namely their choice of recent opponents, suggests otherwise.
“See, we like to fight, not to make statements. If they give us a weight limit, we will make it from 147-160 pounds. We will make that weight and we will show up for fight night. That’s all we know what to do. We don’t know nothing else,” he explained in a recent interview with FightHype’s own Ryan Kennedy. “Paul is a fighter, he’s a warrior, he wants to fight. These other guys play these politic games and I’ve never been good at that. We just like to fight.
To some degree, Peterson has a valid point. Over the past few years, Paul Williams has continued to seek out the best competition from 147 to 160 pounds, having fought and beaten the likes of current middleweight champion Sergio Martinez, former undisputed jr. middleweight champion Winky Wright, as well as former welterweight champion Antonio Margarito in a bout that took place nearly 18 months prior to the discovery of illegal hand wraps which ultimately led to Shane Mosley’s destruction of the shamed champion. For one reason or another, neither Mayweather or Pacquiao have been too eager to consider Williams as a potential opponent, despite the fact that he only has one loss on his record.
Even now, as Williams prepares for his own rematch with Sergio Martinez, Pacquiao is deep in training for a showdown with Margarito…the same Margarito
that Shane Mosley stopped in 2009; the same Margarito that Williams defeated in 2007. Naturally, Peterson is unimpressed with Pacquiao’s selection of opponents and believes the Filipino icon will have an easy time against a fighter that Williams beat three years ago. When asked who he thinks will win, Peterson simply replied, “Pacquiao!” When asked if he thought Pacquiao would stop him, his answer was a short, “Yeah.”
So what say you fans? Does George Peterson have a point? Instead of persuing fights with Shane Mosley or Antonio Margarito, should Mayweather and Pacquiao have made a better effort to challenge arguably the third best pound-for-pound fighter in the world in Paul Williams? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
