2. A shot or series of shots of a specified nature or subject: news footage of the royal wedding.

Interesting. I've never read the definition before and the 2nd point is a tricky one. It depends how you interpret it I guess.

I would consider a series of shots to be something like film reels.

I'm not too sure, though, but you could be right.

It's obviously referring to film reels, which are the shot footage that is later turned into a movie etc

A motion picture is simply a synonym for movie or film.

I'm guessing about 99% of people who read the thread title and saw the word "footage" were expecting a video to pop-up and not just still photographs.
