LAS VEGAS—Floyd Mayweather Jr. turned age 50 today and he was in a wistful mood.
Never known as a deep or philsophical, reflective person during his Hall Of Fame boxing career, a time marked bly flash, cash and controversy en route to an undefeated record, Mayweather has been changed by the passing years.
“Mike Tyson was right in saying, as he did when he was done with boxing, old too soon, smart too late. I feel the same way because, despite all I accomplished in the prize ring, the average guy on the street or the boys down at my barbershop, they don't talk about who I fought or who I beat,” Mayweather said as he sat at the desk at his thriving gymnasium.
“They all want to talk about or they are all thinking about the one guy I did not fight. I can admit now, I woulda, coulda, shoulda fought Manny Pacquiao, that little Filipino pest and squashed him like an irritating bug. I had my chance to do so in 2010 and then the whole following year but I frittered it away.
“It was an ego thing for me, really,” Mayweather said. “I felt like HBO and everyone else was demanding I fight this Manny Come Lately. I felt like they handed him my Pound For Pound king title when I took a brief retirement.
“My ego got the best of me, I would not listen to my own advisers. They kept talking about the biggest purse in boxing history, something like $52 million going into my pocket before the tax bite. All I thinking about is they might screw me, rob me of a decision, get to the ref or some of the judges, some dirty business like that.
“I knew the juice (power and influence) Bob Arum had in Nevada because, remember, he was my promoter for a long time. I also felt my bad guy image, playing the villain, would hurt me with the officials.
“Frankly, I knew I could hurt Manny but I was unsure I could stop him. Give him that, he keeps coming and I was worried if we were both standing after 12 rounds, it would be payback time, that they find a way to shove it up my old wazoo if you know what I mean.”
Mayweather bemoaned the fact that, over time, much of undefeated pro career has been forgotten.
“I guess it happens with all the great ones,” Mayweather said. “The public remembers the last portion of your career and the newer generation....well, all they know is what they hear from their elders. The elders put this mark on me, they say I ducked Poochiao or however you say his name.
“I'ts true, I did but not because I thought he was a superior fighter. I would have him eating so many jabs he'd have left the arena with 'Everlast' imprinted on his foreheaed. But I didn't trust Poochiao, I feared he would cheat by using some undetectable drugs and, as I said, that the system would **** me on the scorecards.”
Mayweather also admits his final 10 opponents were no great shakes.
Over his final 10 bouts, Mayweather beat DeMarcus Corley, Hnery Brusseles, A rturo Gatti, Sharmba Mitchell, Zab Judah, Carlos Baldomir, Oscar de la Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Juan Manuel Marquez and Shane Mosley.
“People only knock the guys I beat and always bring up who I ducked besides Poochiao, like Antonio Margarito for example. I felt he was a cheater also and I was proved right on that one.
“I can admit that Corley, Brusseles, Gatti and Mitchell were nothing special, either faded journeymen or just pretenders...but what about Zab? I ought to get some real props. You never saw Poochiao looking to fight the slick Judah. I outslicked the slickster,” Mayweather said. "And how about my two wins over Jose Luis Castillo, he was a bad man at the time.
“Baldomir, he was in there only because he beat Gatti,” Mayweather said. “One journeyman beat another, they glorified Gatti with their usual racism.
“I should have gotten real credit for easily beating Oscar. I softened him up for Poochia, you know this.
“I was at my real peak of my powers that night, I did not even start fighting until the fourth or fifth round. I made a clown out of Oscar and Poochiao got my leftovers just like he did with Hatton. Those two cats were just punched tickets after I whipped them, shells of their former selves.
“The haters would not relent, they said Juan Ma was too small, which he was, and that Mosley was too old, which I guess at 38 he was. I did not look to fight him a few years earlier. I let his talent dissipate and then I took him on.”
Mayweather said that Arum's presence was the dealbreaker at the end of the day.
“That guy was such a snake,” Mayweather said. “He used every dirty trick in the book, hell, he could have written his own book of lowdown, dirty tricks in boxing. If Poochiao had been with Golden Boy, I'd have fought him. If Poochiao had been with Gary Shaw or (Lou) DiBella, any of those guys.
“But I felt Arum screwed me, shortchanged me once, and then I got smart and ditched him. I wasn't going to let him screw me a second time. You know, the fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me thing.
“I will go to my grave being the guy who allegedly ducked Poochiao. I kind of laugh about it now because, in truth, it would have been one of my easiest fights. That one-dimensional guy would not have done any better than Hatton did against me.
“The haters think they won but I'm satisfied. Maybe I was not the greatest ever but I'm in that category. When you go into the record books and look up undefeated champions, you see Rocky Marciano and Floyd Mayweather.
“I can live with that, I really can. I lost to no man.
"You can look it up, you really can."
