Comments Thread For: Pongsaklek Wonjongkam Barely Beats Chokchai To Retain

At Muang in Srisaket, Thailand, WBC flyweight champion Pongsaklek Wonjongkam (77-3, 40KOs) retained his title with a close, twelve round unanimous decision over Suriyan Por Chokchai (14-5, 4KOs). The scores were 115-114, 114-113 and 115-112. It was surprising that Wonjongkam had so much trouble with a the far less experienced challenger. It was the first defense of title Wonjongkam won from popular Japanese fighter Koki Kameda earlier this year.

I had no idea that he was even fighting.

Very suprised he did so poorly against a guy like that.

Looks like we will have a new member of the P4P list

Some of our all-time accomplished fighters go down to the level of their opponents. It's normal.....such as Salvador Sanchez.

Chokchai was a 14-4 scrub who didn't belong in a title fight, but a lot of Wonjongkam's title defenses have been against bums. This may just be a case of Wonjongkam fighting down to the level of his competition, but it's strange that he beat Miranda and Kameda and then goes the distance with a club fighter like Chokchai.

                Far out !!

                Anyone watch this fight ?

I'm trying to work out if this was a stylistic issue, or if Pong is starting to slow down.

It appeared to be a pretty straight-forward defence.

                Does anyone have anymore info?

Training/weight/preparation problems? Just an awkward style match-up maybe? Or is Pong fading?

That is a very good point.

It's been traditionally observed, and I kinda have to agree, that a great fighter will usually not fight down to the level of his opposition..... he will blow him out of there..... but it can happen with a bad style.

I would say a bit of a both, having just got around to watching it, I think its possible he could of been edged out, that said, it was close, either way was fine with me.

Chok was able to use his legs against Pong, counter him when he came foward, get off first with his extra speed when Pong sat around waiting to pick up counters, however in in the mid portion of the fight Pong seemed to get his act together a bit, although he was aided down the stretch by Chok, who seemed to want to take it to Pong and turn it into a war, that worked in Pong's favour as he is much better counter puncher than aggressor, he got the best of Chok on the inside when he tried to take it to Pong.

Early in the fight Chok would stand on periphery of the kill zone use his legs, work the angles and ask Pong to close the gap, only Pong was not working his way in with the jab, which would of stabilized Chok for other punches, that meant he got counted when he tried to attack, and picked off by Chok's superior speed when waiting to counter, his main success came when Chok became more aggressive and tried to take it to him more, that left more counter punching opportunities for him.
