Chisora’s trainer is confident that they can pull off the upset, Chisora is starting training today for the fight.
Finchley’s Derek Chisora looks set to challenge Wladimir Klitschko for his IBF and WBO world heavyweight crowns on December 11th in Germany, but when Chisora first broke the news of an offer his trainer Don Charles thought it was ‘Del Boy’s’ idea of a late night joke.
The 26 year-old Chisora, who has been known more than once to have caught the attention with some eccentric behaviour including biting and kissing two opponents, called Charles late one evening recently to break the news they had been offered the chance of a lifetime.
As Don lay on his pillow close to midnight an excited Chisora phoned to reveal an astonishing opportunity.
“We have been offered the Klitschko fight!” said the enigmatic British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion. Rather than share the immediate excitement tired trainer Charles had getting to sleep on his mind and wasn’t in the mood for late night comedy slots.
“Go back to sleep, Derek,” answered Charles. But Chisora wasn’t joking and a confident Charles now sees no reason to be intimidated in facing the Ukrainian giant if the fight goes ahead.
“He breathes oxygen, he has got two hands and one head,” explained the knowledgeable Charles.
“Leon Spinks won the heavyweight title after just eight fights so why not? Just like Leon we are going to shock the world.”
Chisora has only been a professional since 2007 but has gone 14-0 since turning over. 'Del Boy' is also **** in form and high in confidence following his impressive victory over Sam Sexton last month and Charles feels that Wladimir sees him as a soft touch but warned he would be in for a huge surprise.
“Klitschko is made for my boy, we will put him on the back foot. He is ready for the taking, he doesn’t like fighting. We will make him work.”
Charles was lying awake at night since Chisora’s victory over Sexton on 18th September, angered at the lack of media credit for his protégé but rejects claims Chisora is not ready to face 60,000 Klitschko supporters and the more vastly experienced champion.
“Derek gets turned on by bigger crowds. He wants to be the man and the centre of attention. We will stop him inside seven rounds and shock the world.”
Chisora has had a taste of big crowds before, when contesting his second professional before 40,000 fans in Cardiff on the undercard of Joe Calzaghe and Peter Manfredo in 2007.
Boxing websites and forums have already began diminishing Chisora’s chances and I suggested to Don this fight reminds me of 1986 when Lloyd Honeyghan travelled Stateside to challenge the then formidable and undefeated welterweight king Don Curry.
But Honeyghan produced one of the greatest upsets in boxing history by stopping Curry, and Chisora can take heart that he would be facing a man who has been halted three times in 58 fights.
Trainer Charles thinks Chisora is about to hit his prime and added he has total confidence in his man’s ability.
“I have 100 per cent belief (of winning) I’m not a mug, it’s not about money, we don’t mind taking peanuts. It’s about becoming world champion, Derek is a complete fighter.”
Wladimir and his brother Vitali were both keen to fight WBA rival holder David Haye earlier this year but terms couldn’t be agreed and Charles thinks this is a reflection on Haye’s self belief.
“Haye doesn’t believe in his own ability and is over protective,” added Charles in reference to Haye’s unwillingness to back down on his terms.
Chisora begins training on Monday. I know I’m in a huge minority but far bigger upsets have happened before so why not here?
Derek has got a great chance.
Don Charles has convinced me ‘Del Boy’ is certainly no plonker.
