Floyd Mayweather gave his first interview in some time yesterday when he appeared with his new fiancee on Sirius radio and talked about a variety of topics including arch rival Manny Pacquiao, and the how the legal situation that lead to him being charged with four felonies and four misdemeanors came about.
Obviously, given that the channel is heavily associated with Mayweather's close pal 50 Cent, the interview with DJ Whoo kid was never going to be exactly hard hitting, but there were a few interesting snippets none the less amongst talk of green themed weddings and the usual bemoaning his lack of recognition.
"I've given the sport 15 years of my life"
"41 fights and only one opponent counts? I'm never going to get the props that I truly truly deserve"
Making close to a hundred million dollars for his last two fights and widely being recognized as the pound for pound best fighter in the world for a period of several years isn't exactly evidence for Mayweather's complaints of mistreatment.
Neither is the talk of him fighting Manny Pacquiao. Both are future hall of fame fighters, both have achieved things that few boxers will ever come close to and both are in their prime and in the same division. And even for those who abhor Floyd, that still usually means they consider him at least the second best fighter of his generation.
"Anytime that something that's negative they wanna put it on the news and bash me and beat me down but when I feed the homeless and when I feed the people that's less fortunate they never put that out there and show the world that part of me. If you wanna show some negative things I do you entitled to do that, but also show some positive things that I do also"
On the recent domestic incident with Josie Harris, the mother of three of Mayweather's children, he was eager to get his side of the story across, and said that the incident began when he found that his children weren't being cared for in an adequate manner.
"I asked her why is my kids school clothes all over the house that I bought them. She got the house looking like hoarders. She's letting her girlfriends live off my children's monthly income. I told her all this drinking and partying every night, you have to get a job and find a new place and I need to get custody of my kids"
Mayweather also mentioned that Harris demanded over sixty thousand dollars per month in child support, which he claims she used for partying. If this is all true, then it would go a long way to explaining why Harris might make up complaints of battery, although of course what really happened that night will have to be determined in the courts it seems.
Floyd also attempted to rationalize his racist video rant against Manny Pacquiao, stating that Ricky Hatton made comments that he considered racist but that he didn't say anything.
"As far as with saying I'm a racist because of the Pacquiao incident on the Ustream, but you got to realize on the 24/7 with me and Ricky Hatton when we both was preparing for out fight and he was on tv and said: 'look at my bling, look at my rings, look at my shoes, look at my clothes, I'm ballin', I never said that was racist when he said that."
Its certainly debatable whether what Hatton said could be construed as racist or not, but certainly it wasn't anywhere near what Floyd came out with his his Ustream video. Not once did Hatton mention the color of Floyd's skin, and whether he was making fun of 'bling' in general or Mayweather's habit of wearing a lot of it is also arguable.
Equally as importantly, if nothing racist was said during the course of the video, why the apology video the next day?
Steve Howe, Pittsburgh: "Once again Floyd opens his mouth and can't control what comes out. Hatton was racist because he made fun of Floyd's gaudy million dollar ***elry? Yeah right, blame himself being racist on a fighter in rehab, how low can he get"
Gary Alardine, Pittsburgh: "I'm not sure what to believe about the domestic stuff. I would have thought she would have more injuries if she was being beaten up by a boxer, but then again his kid is backing up her story"
Floyd said "We're gonna cook that lil young chump." The media are the 'racist' ones running with "yellow" when it was never said. Funny thing they bleep out "young" in their videos to promote their news outlets claims of racisim to have people watch them when the original video CLEARLY shows and you hear Floyd say "young" chump. So much for integrity in journalism.
