China, preparing for the 2012 Olympics in London, beat the United States 6-5 in an amateur boxing tournament in New York on Friday.

I can't believe the American team did even that well. Maybe there's hope for American boxing after all.

I'm sure the Chinese team trains at least twice as hard as the Americans. They're like the USSR in the 80s.

I am working in China, and I went and visited one of the boxing academies in Shenyang a northern city in China. It doesn't surprise me that they beat USA. They train 6 days a week, from 6am in the morning to 7pm in the evening. Its crazy, I couldn't believe it, they will dominate the Olympics.

You see they have these sport schools where some kids go, instead of going to a normal school, here the kids learn sport every day instead of doing exams, and all the other **** associated with school. When their finished sport school (reach the age of 18) they can go to a sport university. I have never heard of this type of system in any other country, I only witnessed it in china.

My question is will they dominate the professional ranks in the future???
You see up to very recently it was illegal for them to turn professional, just like it is or was in Cuba.

The USSR did the same thing back in the day: they pushed their athletes to the max so they could beat the West/USA at the Olympics and come out on top. They weren't even allow to go pro because the only goal was Olympic Gold Medals.

Some notable guys have come out of there, like the heavyweight champions of the world, haha. The Klitschkos of course came up post-USSR, but that Soviet-era work ethic was still very strong. Povetkin, Pirog, and Ibragimov have all made a splash representing Russia as well.

I wasn't even aware the Chinese were allowed to turn pro. It will be interesting to see over the next decade how the Chinese do.

Still can believe the Americans did so well.

Im not impressed team usa is hand picked not by ability but by
who is there favorite at that time all i read about on the web
is how bad the scoring is at the national level and ive seen it at
the local level.

yeah yeah, they are permitted to turn pro, an american promoter/trainer (Not exactly sure) called Dino Duva stroke a deal with the chinese boxing organisation, he agreed to work with the fighters, be involved with organising the training and commericialize boxing in the country. The aim is to work towards an assault on the 2012 London Olympics, but after that if a fighter decides to turn professional but i think Duva has an automatic 1st choice on whether he wants to be the promoter of the boxer in the professional ranks.


P.S. There is alot of hype about one amature boxer, called Zhang Zhilei, he is a 6"7 superheavyweight

Cuba has the same system, there is a movie on it called "Sons of Cuba" I believe.
