Miguel Cotto will not return to the ring this year.
And that's not so surprising. What I do not believe is the reason he gave the 154-pound champion of the WBA-through some speakers, to stay idle until 2011.
As said Cotto, the refusal of Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr., confront him on 4 December, was better to continue lying to face a rival that is not at their level.
And among those opponents who Cotto considered 'petty' is the Puerto Rican Kermit Cintron, who emerged as the main option to quarrel with the Caguas on the above date.
That is, Cotto is not acceptable for a fight against a former world champion 30-year mark of 32 wins, only three losses (two of them at the first perpetrator of Cotto and a very doubtful), a tie, a whopping 28 knockouts and, precisely because of his devastating punch, is acceptable to HBO.
That would be easier to swallow if Cotto always been faced with the 'cream' of boxing and was currently on the crest of the wave. But that's not the case.
Although the fighter nicknamed Junito has been for the past years one of the leading figures in boxing and has delivered spectacular battles with some sawhorses, also in his time champion has been 'cured' with boxers for a below average level, which easily can be counted among the dead, talking boxing.
Cotto had a great year in 2007, when Madison Square Garden shook knocking out Zab Judah. A few months later in that same scene, gave him a boxing lesson from Shane Mosley finally reaching the level of stardom. But after that, the star faded.
Of the six fights he has done since then, only two fighter Cotto has faced a first-order. And, you guessed it. These are Antonio Margarito and Manny Pacquiao, casual or causally responsible for the two losses, both beatings, which have Cotto on his record.
Another mid-level fighter that Cotto has faced in that span is Joshua Clottey, which dictates much of being a skillful boxer, aggressive hitter. The Ghanaian enduring punishment and has great physical condition, but that was it. However, Cotto could not dominate and scored a victory that should have ended a draw and could have been a victory for Africa.
The other three teams have been mediocre Alfonso Gomez, Michael Jennings and most recently, Yuri Foreman. The three chosen strategically by Top Rank to make Cotto sported well. Of course, Cotto did what he had to do and all of them sent at ease and win.
But here lies is that the unthinkable. Is that Cintron is worse than Gomez, Jennings and Foreman?
Anyone who knows a bit of boxing, it is clear that Cintron is superiorísimo carolinense those three and even, for many, including the server, rather than Clottey and Chavez, Jr. So much so I think Cintron would be very good chance to beat Cotto.
Then, go into the real reasons for not accepting Cotto was measured with Cintron when virtually the promoters Bob Arum and Lou DiBella agreed and knowing that Cotto throughout his career has been repeated ad nauseam that he fights against Top Rank which prompted.
There may be several reasons: the money offered was not satisfied, not fully recovered from the operation she underwent in July on his right shoulder, means-perhaps by consulting Emanuel Steward, his current coach and trainer of Cintron-past which is a very dangerous fight at this point in his career, or all the above.
I lean toward the latter.
