As reported earlier by BoxingScene.com, junior middleweight contender James Kirkland, imprisoned since April 2009 after pleading guilty to a charge of gun possession by a convicted felon, was released from Bastrop Federal Prison, Bastrop, Tex., on Thursday morning, will spend the remaining months of his sentence in an Austin, Tex., halfway house.

This is smart, kinda. I've done prison time, and I know for a fact that after a year in the junt, Kirkland isn't gonna be ready to fight in a month. Hell, he's probably not gonna be ready to fight in two months. He's probably gained a good amount of weight. So before he starts training for a fight, he needs to take that weight off properly. Not just in a crash course to rush and get back active.

The guy was an HBO main event and now he's taking an off TV fight against a bum just trying to see if he's still got it.

Prison did not help his career. Hopefully it helped his head though and makes him realize not to be foolish.
