WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (26-0, 20 KO), may have finally zeroed in on an opponent for his November 27, 2010 fight date on the undercard of the Juan Manuel Marquez – Michael Katsidis pay-per-view card. Berto has been unable to secure an opponent for some time now. He has expressed interest in fights with the likes of jr. welterweight Andriy Kotelnik, Jo Jo Dan, and Sebastian Lujan. Despite the WBC’s urging of a mandatory defense against number two-rated Selcuk Aydin, negotiations never took place.
Berto has taken much criticism since he won the vacant WBC title in a June 2008 fight against Mexican police officer Miguel Rodriguez. His title defenses have included long-time lightweight and Jr. welterweight contender Steve Forbes, Luis Collazo, jr. welterweight Juan Urango, and former WBO welterweight titlist Carlos Quintana. Berto fought a life-and-death battle with Collazo in between two boring fights with Forbes and Urango.
Welterweight Freddie Hernandez (ranked #11 by the WBC) , who won by technical knockout over Mike Anchondo on September 17, now looks like he will be Berto’s dance partner on November 27. It seems unlikely that Freddie Hernandez will silence Berto’s critics, while bigger and better fights remain unexplored by the man that has made so much noise calling out he likes of Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley.
