Should Derek Chisora Take The Wladimir Klitschko Title Shot?

Too quick and too soon or an opportunity which can't be missed? At only 14 fights deep, an almost magical chance has materialized for Derek Chisora to compete for Wladimir Klitschko's heavyweight titles.. Should he take the golden opportunity now or hold fast and gain more experience against lesser opponents in the hope of another world title shot materializing down the line?

      Yes.

      - It will be by far his biggest payday.
      - It will raise his profile so he'll make more in future fights.
      - The experience will do him good
      - If he loses to Wlad, it won't be at all detrimental to his career.

Yeah, course he should. It sworth the preparation and to only have lost to Wlad would be a good resume and he would last a decent length of time.

No - a demoralising 9-10 round beatdown against Wlad will harm him for years to come.

Even if that was true, so what? I am sure they offered him at least $1 million, when else is he going to get that type of money anytime soon? Why get your brains beat out by Tyson Furys of the world for $50K a pop (if that) when you can make a payday that will enable you to walk away from boxing? I am sure Chisora hasn't made one/tenth of what Wlad is offering him for any of his fights. Why not take the risk and the opportunity to get 4 HW belts?

That's the problem with fighters these days like Povetkin, you get offered the opportunity of a lifetime and instead you say, "nah, I am not ready yet, but I am sure the opportunity will come again when I am ready" , it doesn't work that way, a lot can happen to Povetkin (and Chisora) while waiting until they are "ready", they could get KTFO by some bum and that million dollar payday will never happen ever again and they will be kicking their sorry @sses for the rest of their lives.

A similar thought crossed my mind, a loss to Wlad shouldn't effect his overall ranking too drastically, assuming he puts up a decent fight, and after the Wlad fight he'd be truly established at world level. He may then have an opportunity to fight Haye and maybe even Vitali who both might try and better Wladimir's performance. Depending on the manner of defeat, Chisora could earn himself another title shot or two relatively soon after the Wladimir bout.

That's possible too, but the question keeps coming up: how much better would Chisora perform against Wladimir with more experience under his belt? It might only be the difference between getting stopped in 7th and stopped in the 8th. Now let's say Chisora manages to last the full 12 against Wladimir while losing most of the rounds, or even if he's KO'd after putting on a decent performance, he might grow to see that as an accomplishment rather than a failure. Also to gain that ring experience at such an early point in his career could be beneficial rather than detrimental later on down the line.

If he says *** with my career and goes for the payday it's up to him. But smart money says he should wait.

Yeah, why the hell not? He might never get the opportunity again. The only thing I worry about is that the British tabloids are absolute wolves and coupled with the general ignorance of the casual British boxing fans and their disdainful opinions of Wlad I can see a lot of people getting their hopes falsely built up in Chisora only to be brutally brought down to earth come fight night. If that happens don't expect either the tabs or the casuals to go easy on Del Boy.
