With his fight with Castillejo coming up on the 20th, i just wanted to get an idea of how those of you here felt about Fernando and if he still could make an impact on the sport. I heard rumors awhile back that he is out of shape. I think he needs more fights to make sure all ring rust is off. I didn't see his last fight with Joval but i remember it was back in late March and that was his first fight since 03. It seems alot of the general public, those that did know him, now have forgotten about him. Do you think he can come back in the general publics eye? I think Vargas v. Mayorga could be great for both fighters careers.

How are his back problems? If he is now off steroids, will he be the same fighter? How badly damaged is he after getting KO'd twice? The Trinidad KO was brutal. He couldn't miss the DLH left hooks but that seemed to be more of stamina problem.
I'd like to see him come back and do well because he is a crowd pleaser. There are too many cautious boring fighters out there that couldn't draw 50 people to an arena. (Winky!). -
He has a thyroid problem that is something that isnt ever going to be cured. I think he looked horrible in his last 2 comebacks against Fitz and Joval. I think his better days are behind him and think he should retire. Ring rust or not in his last fight he looked like an old fighter in there 40's.....Vargas had a decent run but to much to soon will always be mentioned in his career.Comment

Fernando the fighter is someone that every boxing fan should love-when he goes down he goes down in a blaze of glory, his fights with Tito and Oscar were great PPV's and he had just as much to do with those fights being great as the two superstars did if not more!
With that said I love to root against Nando and believe that he is half the fighter he was when he fought Tito, however he still has a battle or two left in him that is going to thrill the boxing fans, if anyone deserves to come out on top in a seasaw battle it would be Fernando but judging on how he looked against Joval I cant see him pulling it off, he will thrill us again but I think ultimately he will wind up on his back just like he has in the past.Comment

I like Vargas I think he has a ton of ability, he dropped of the radar for a while but theres no doubt he can still make a big impact.Comment

I wish we could have the "old" Vargas back, but Tito AND DLH made that impossible.
The "new" Vargas was overly defensive and held back alot, even when it appeared he had Joval hurt. He was tweaking a new style, and while he will probably stick to it vs. Castillejo and win a decision or late stoppage, I do feel that style will be abandoned vs. Mayorga for better or for worse in what would be a tremendous fight. So I don't think we can judge Fernando until that fight if it happens (unless of course he blows out Castillejo or gets KO'd).
I'm rooting for him, though, because Mayorga-Vargas would be a great fight.Comment

I don't ever think we will see the old Vargas back. Tito ruined him physically and DLH more emotionally. He is pretty much a shot fighter as his speed, instinct, and power have gone. Maybe he can prove us wrong in his next fight, but I think he will look ordinary as usual.Comment

Damaged goods. He's done. He is injury prone, is noticeably slower and seems more and more robotic each time I see him.Comment
