Comments Thread For: Bellew Decisions Ajisafe, Appleby Stops Coveney

Tony Bellew, Commonwealth light heavyweight champion, had stepped into the ring at Grosvenor House Hotel in Mayfair, London, with a clear intention to become a worthy challenger to British best Nathan Cleverly and to prove he is one of the most promising fresh guns of local boxing. He left it about an hour later with frustration written all over his face after a hard-fought and disappointing twelve-round unanimous decision over ultimately awkward but determined pretender Bob Ajisafe (8-2, 2 KOs) of Leeds, UK.

Bellew has to be one of the worst Commonwealth champs I have seen in a long time. No movement, no jab, no defense. Cleverly would KO him early, and brutally. He is open for any punch with that sloppy defense and is not going to get much higher than Commonwealth level until he learns how to box.

If Ajisafe had fought with more self belief, he could have outboxed Bellews easily. After the knockdown in the 4th he started to handle Bellews without much trouble for the next 2-3 rounds, but for whatever reason his confidence slipped and after that he seemed content just to finish on his feet.
