Sure, but Oscar was the pretty boy and he never "won over" the hardcore Mexican boxing fans. He sold VERY WELL with the casual boxing fans all over Latin America as a celebrity.

Canelo is no celebrity but has the hardcore Mexican and Mexican American boxing fans all rooting for him.

While race is a factor, I think the biggest factor is that Mexicans see a bright (VERY bright) future in him. He might become boxing's CHICHARITO.

My point is, Mexico is a big country, and sports a great amount of diverse people. Especially if you are from big popular states like Jalisco or D.F. Don't be surprised if find white looking people en la tierra del Sol...or black as some Africans from Nigeria.
