by David P. Greisman - Is it worth it?

This is the question asked first by boxing promoters, then later by boxing fans.

Is it worth it, as a promoter, to put a fight on pay-per-view? Is it worth it, as a fan, to buy it?

Increasingly often for promoters, the answer is “yes.” Increasingly often for fans, the answer is “yes” beforehand, “no” afterward, then “yes” again later.

That is why the boxing match this past Saturday between Shane Mosley and Sergio Mora was on pay-per-view.

HBO wouldn’t pay for it to be on a “World Championship Boxing” broadcast, choosing against subsidizing the fighters’ paychecks with a sizeable license fee. There were other fights its subscribers would rather see, other fights the network would rather spend its money on.

But fans would pay for it – a fraction of the number that would tune in on HBO, yet enough of them that the promoters and fighters would profit.

It did not matter that Mosley was coming off a decisive loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr., a night in which Mosley had one big moment as the result of two big punches – but that moment was the only round that Mosley won.

It did not matter that Mora was more than two years removed from his only win of true consequence, a decision victory over the late Vernon Forrest. Three months after that, Forrest had beaten Mora more decisively than Mora had beat him. Mora fell out of the spotlight and off the map for a year and a half.

It did not matter that the match paired an aging fighter with an awkward boxer, that the pairing of such styles produced a debacle in which Mosley spent much of the night pursuing because Mora spent much of the night not punching. [Click Here To Read More]

Good article.....you can blame HBO----> Haymon Boxing Organisation for the fact SSM vs Berto didn't get made. Haymon got Berto a big guarantee in one of his fights before and the greedy midget didn't want to take a pay cut to get a shot at SSM.....ignoring the fact a decisive victory would have increased his guarantee by some margin and given him more credibility as an opponent for big name fighters such as Pac and Floyd.

Greed in this case is not good :****you:

      Short sighted Berto!!!! :****you:

I'm very impartial when it comes to scoring a fight and if it is close I can understand certain opinions. In no way shape or form Mora won that fight or was even a draw. At the most he won 3 rounds and for his account did fight the last 3 rounds. It was a waste of money for that PPV card whith such a lame ending

I think PPV should return some of the money if the fight end up been crap. They should be concern about keeping customer's as much as making the money.
I know PPV customer felt like they burn money last Sat. Can't blaim them either.

When I was asked on Sunday how the fights went, my answer was "The main event ******, but the undercard was great." By "great" I don't neccessarily mean great match-ups, but fighters worth seeing. I don't buy that many PPVs, I usually weigh the options, and in this case and future cases, if the undercard has as many great fighters to make up for a bad main event, I would still consider buying it. It's what they should be doing (putting on other bouts worth seeing) with all the PPVs, but it seems rare. To be honest, the Mosely/Mora fight ISN'T the fight I wanted to see the most, it just happened to be the main event.
The person that had asked me about the fights responded, "That's good, that's only a little over $10 per fight." And so, in this case, I didn't mind spending the money to watch 3 other descent fights.
If promoters and management companies are going to insist (or are forced) to make a PPVs out of fights that should honestly be televised for free (w/subscription), then they should be giving the viewers the most for their bucks. It seems simple to me... put on great undercards, (and in turn keeping their other prospect fighters busy) and they may actually see their PPV buys go up. If only one part of a five course meal is good, it isn't usually worth buying IMO.
