LOS ANGELES - After Floyd Mayweather Jr. defeated Shane Mosley in their big welterweight showdown in Vegas on May 1, Mayweather decided to take a long vacation. Mosley set about planning his future, which included fighting again before the year was over.
Four months later, Mayweather is facing four felony charges, including robbery, larceny and coercion, and four misdemeanor charges stemming from a domestic incident involving Josie Harris, the mother of three of his children, in Las Vegas last week. Meanwhile, Mosley is preparing to meet Sergio Mora in a 12-round junior middleweight match at the Staples Center on HBO Pay-Per-View Saturday night.
"He should have stayed in boxing and taken that fight with Manny Pacquiao," Mosley said of Mayweather. "When you're not fighting or getting ready to fight you start to lose focus and you start getting into trouble."
According to the criminal complaint filed in Clark County, Nev., Mayweather is accused of "willfully, unlawfully and feloniously" using physical force, or the immediate threat of such force, against his sons, Koraun and Zion Mayweather, by threatening to "beat" the boys if they called 911 or left the residence. He is also accused of grabbing Harris by the hair and throwing her to the floor "and/or striking her with a fist and/or twisting her arm," among other charges.
Mosley, who went through a testy promotion with Mayweather leading up to their fight, has known Mayweather for a long time. The two of them have played basketball together. Mosley was caught off guard by the comments Mayweather made in a racially charged Internet video rant against Pacquiao two weeks ago, but he wasn't surprised.
"He speaks without thinking sometimes," Mosley said. "That's what he was doing that day. He's not a bad guy one-on-one. But when he's around his entourage and they're egging him on he feels like he has to entertain them. It seems like he's got a lot of things going on in his personal life. This thing with his ex-girlfriend, that's serious. I think he's gotten into something that he can't get out of."
Mayweather's legal problems could open doors for Mosley to have bigger fights in the future. If Mayweather becomes unavailable for a match against Pacquiao because of his legal woes, Mosley could jump in line. Pacquiao would first have to get past Antonio Margarito in their match at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas on Nov. 13.
