I want to enlighten you all a little on using boxing in MMA. It is a totally separate style. Different stances must be used to avoid take downs and kicks. Clinching is much different as you have to watch for and defend elbows and knees as well as the take down. You also have to think about the cage - no rope a dope in there! Just wanted to get that in before boxing purists talk about how sloppy they think their form is and what not.
The is how you use boxing effectively in MMA.

Interestingly enough, Ive been attending an mma club the last few days, and I surprisingly am already on the level with the top strikers there simply through my boxing knowledge. From my experience, these are tips I would give for a boxer in an mma situation.
1. Footwork. Circling to the left and right can very often totally baffle mma fighters. plus it helps you keep your distance for takedowns. dont be shy to use your feet, being quick on your feet is not only defensively excellent against mma fighters but almost helps set up offensive assaults. Lateral movement really is a beautiful thing.
2. Distance. Like above, you dont want to get too close to a guy thats trying to take you down. Make sure youre at least arms length away from the guy and you can often stuff the takedown before they get to grab you.
3. Counters. Surprisingly extremely useful. If you can force the mma guy to lead and throw out a punch or get into your range, you can very quickly pop him and get out again. and it takes very little power behind each punch to do damage with those smaller mma gloves on.
4. Left hooks. not sure why, but I feel like left hooks around the guard hit very often. always gotta be careful though.
5. Jabs. Even if you miss with the left hand, you can still post it on the other guys' head, forcing them away from you and from you getting taken down.
6. Be patiently aggressive. Kicks can be very damaging, but they are also actually extremely risky. your balance is all screwed up because youre only standing on one leg: that means your equilibrium is all off and your defense suffers badly. If someone throws a kick, block it(or take it) and then immediately go after them. they cant do much to you with one leg off the ground.

But I'm also probably taking up MMA as well, for fitness and as something else to do, so I shall keep these tips in mind!
However, TS is right to a point. If you go out and box in a pure boxing sense, you are taking a risk, as you may find yourself getting your leg kicked in and having no base to stand on, or you might be on the floor and get Toney'd
