Danny Williams spoke to Boxing News this week about pulling out of the Matt Skelton fight... a fight that would have introduced him to a prime-time terrestial TV audience (Okay, I know he's been on BBC at sort-of prime time, but no one watched boxing on the BBC, did they? And certainly not at 9pm) and, if victorious, a shot at John Ruiz. Yet he pulled out with less than 24 hours' notice, screwing it up.
As a result, Skelton called him a "yellow back." Williams - a man who's hero is Rocky Marciano, and was still begging Jay Nady to let him carry on after over seven rounds of a one-sided kicking from Vitali Klitschko - says he's only even been as "up" for a fight as when Herbie Hide was calling him out a few years back.
Apparently Williams WAS ill, but wanted to go ahead for all the right reasons... his family called him out at the last minute. After hearing what Skelton had been saying, Danny is prepared to give Frank Warren his own money as a retainer just to get a chance at knocking Skelton out in a rescheduled meeting in September.
Skelton looked below mediocre in his last showing, and has been in trouble - Bob Mirovic had one of his eyes closed before pulling out. Matt - arguably the least-skilled heavyweight out there today - is slow and ponderous, and uses bullying tactics in place of genuine skill. Now Danny has taken a personal grudge against him, I can't wait for September if it comes off.
