Comments Thread For: Klitschko-Peter II/Gamboa-Salido: The Post Report Card

By Cliff Rold - Opinions varied earlier this year when HBO head Ross Greenburg was quoted to the effect that HBO was out of the Klitschko, and Heavyweight, business short of a couple key matches. Given the rich history of Heavyweight, and its status as the division that produces the literal best fighter in the world, there was a purist impulse to see the viewpoint as unfair despite ratings evidence to suggest what Saturday made obvious. I find it strange that Klitschko's defense rating is a B+... the guy gets hit about as often as Mayweather in his fights...

        "Brandon Rios-Anthony Peterson?

Take any thirty seconds of action there and one could find more entertainment value than the Heavyweight produced through most of ten rounds."

        Sad but true.

True. Wladimirs` offense is a very effective defense for him. He gets hit very rarely.

I don't see why it necessarily has to be either/or, especially as the fights didn't clash in terms of the time they happened. And if the problem was budget, they could have just screened the highlights, which wouldn't have cost so much. In any case, that doesn't explain why neither Showtime nor espn showed it. Mayweather's fights are often not entertaining but they always get screened.

Also, when Peter entered the ring he was determined to fight, and had got into his best shape for several years. But after three rounds of painful punishment he became demoralised and went into survival mode. It's easy to be judgemental when it's not you taking the punishment. When absolutely nothing you try works, and you are constantly taking painful punishment, few fighters avoid becoming demoralised. I'm not convinced Haye will fare much better than Peter did (in the unlikely event that he ever agrees to fight Wlad), and it will be interesting to see how he reacts if nothing he tries works. He sure as hell doesn't know how to deal with a world class jab like Wlad's - the Ruiz fight proved that.

Mayweather makes guys miss with shoulder rolls and head movement; Wlad's offense is his defense (that and effective, tactical cinching) more often than not (THAT JAB). It could be a little higher but when he faces guys who can throw down the pipe, he gets touched.
